Welcome to First Grade!
I hope that this year opens up a new world for my students.
The emphasis is on language arts- with reading, phonics, writing, and spelling. Word recognition, phonemic awareness, and writing are important developing skills in first grade. We will continue to use Into Reading and Fountas and Pennell. We will also continue to use Fundations for phonemic awareness.
Our focus in math is on our basic skills: number recognition, addition, subtraction, beginning place value, and shape recognition. We continue to use Envision, which has been updated for the 2023-2024 school year.
We will be using our online science and social studies program, TCI. Emphasis is on communities and our place in the world for social studies. Science involves basic biology (plants and animals), physics (light and sound) and astronomy (the planets). Yes, everything you ever needed to know, you probably learned in first grade and kindergarten!
I would also like to include some very basic financial literacy as part of our first grade curriculum. It never hurts to have a basic understanding of money.
I hope that my classroom will provide a safe, accepting place for my students to learn and have fun. Providing a clean environment with outside time when weather permits is optimal.
