Discovering Mathematics Through Stories

Mathematics and literacy have more in common than we might initially think. Both invite us to notice patterns, make connections, ask questions, communicate ideas, and make sense of the world around us.

Children's literature can provide a meaningful and engaging context for exploring mathematical ideas. Through stories, students can encounter numbers and operations, patterns, shapes, measurement, data, fractions, proportional reasoning, problem solving, and many other concepts in ways that spark curiosity and conversation.

A good mathematical story can also encourage children to see mathematics differently—not simply as something they do in math class, but as something that appears in stories, cultures, nature, communities, and everyday experiences.

The books below are organized by approximate grade band to help families and educators discover stories that can bring mathematical ideas to life. Many can be enjoyed across multiple grade levels; the suggested ranges are simply a starting point.

As you read together, consider asking:

What math do you notice?
What do you wonder?
What patterns do you see?
How would you solve the character's problem?
Can you represent the idea in another way?
Where might we encounter this mathematics in our own lives?

Sometimes a great math lesson begins with a great story.
