Pythagorean Theorem Project
Due:December 6th ,2014
Do you often wonder how the math you are learning is used in real life? In this project, you will learn how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in a particular job field and create a brochure about the career and give a short presentation to share with the class.
Part 1
Select a career to research how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in their job and begin your research. Some example careers to choose from:
Carpenter
Civil Engineer
Architecture Design
Surveyor
GPS & Navigation
Game Programmer
Pilot
Landscape Architect
Plumber
Mechanical Drafter/Engineer
Go to the Londonderry Library Media Center's Research Units web page at
http://schools.londonderry.org/lms/lmc/curr.cfm?subjectId=7 for a place to start your search.
Once you have selected a career, go to the Occupation Outlook Handbook from the US Department of Labor at http://www.bls.gov/oco/ and in the upper right corner, type in the name of the career in the search box to gather information on that career such as a description of the work they do, education needed to work in that field, average salary, etc. Then begin digging deeper into books or Internet resources to find specific examples of how they use the Pythagorean Theorem. This will not always be easy - in some cases, you'll need to read about the job and think about cases where you would use right triangles to find distances between two points. You can create the examples by thinking up a realistic situation in that type of career to explain.
As part of your work outside of class, don't forget that in your research, you can interview a family member or friend that works in that career or use the Internet.
Important information that you should collect regarding the career you chose are: what kind of education and/or training are required in order to be hired into that job - specifically mention important math skills needed; what is the salary range that a person in that job would make; and describe the nature of their work (in general what the person typically does in their job).
Part 2
Create a brochure on the career you selected and explain two examples in detail of how the Pythagorean Theorem is used in that career (you need to make a right triangle, label dimensions and do the math!!).
Rubric
Your brochure should be well organized and present key information. Be creative and use
graphics to enhance your brochure. Information to include in the brochure are:
Description of career
Education & training required for the job
Average salary
Specific examples of how Pythagorean Theorem is used in career (including diagrams)
Separately, you must include a bibliography page citing all of your resources!
Your brochure will be graded on the areas included on the rubric. See link below for a copy of rubric
