The West New York Memorial High School is utilizing a resource consultation/collaboration model called Bridges: Center for Academic Resources & Student Support Services to support general education students; who are eligible for special education and related services, and their general education teachers.
Research shows that teachers who successfully support students with disabilities in their classrooms utilize principles of universal design, differentiate their instructional methods and use active learning strategies such as investigational activities, projects, interviews, cooperative learning, visual illustration of concepts, simulations, problem solving activities, etc. In addition, some students may need curriculum adaptations to achieve academic success.
SERVICES
At the beginning of the school year the Bridges staff informs the general education teachers of the type of accommodations classified students need in their classes. These teachers assist classified students and general education teachers by:
Ø Monitoring the students’ progress;
Ø Assisting the general education teacher with making instructional accommodations and/or modifications;
Ø Co-teaching to introduce a new skills or concept on an as needed basis;
Ø Arranging appointments with students to assist them with organizational issues and/or breaking down assignments into manageable steps
