Mystery Game

All of the mystery games are based on a common format in which the children are presented with a “mystery” the children have to solve. They solve the mystery by answering a question, expressing a preference, making an observation, matching objects, etc., depending on which Mystery Game they are playing. Children respond by placing their name on a card in one slot of a pocket chart, below the answer of their choice.

Morning Meeting

During opening group we do the message of the day, share the news, timeline calendar, and the weather. We will also sing songs, and do finger plays.

Literacy Block (Wonders)

Student are split up into 4 groups and rotate through 5 different literacy centers weekly. During this time the teachers will work with small groups on guided reading, literacy games, and the reading series.

Self Regulation Games

Children practice rhyming skills and oral language. They practice skills that fall under learning goals and habits of mind that relate to following directions, paying attention, developing good learning habits, and participating in the group. Many of these games are a part of what some standards call “cultural literacy,” as they use traditional nursery rhymes.

Science/Health

During this time children will learn/explore particular themes and usually write a learned fact of the topic.

Math: Meeting & Small Groups (Envisions)

During this time the children will learn a math concept as a whole group and later be split into 4 groups (same groups as during Literacy time). In the 4 groups they will be able to use hands on activities in order to better understand the Math concepts being taught.

Buddy Reading and Free Choice

In Buddy Reading, a pair of children “read” books to each other, initially labeling the pictures, and then retelling the story. First one reads and the other listens, then they switch roles. Mediator cards (Lips, Ear) remind them of their roles. Afterwards the children talk to each other about the books.

During Free Choice (FRIDAYS) the children are allowed to choose which center they’d like to go to, unlike during our literacy block where they are told where they are going. They are free to explore/play whatever they’d like at this time, if all work from the week is completed.
