Course Description:

English III is a study of American literature. Grammar, vocabulary, and composition studies are incorporated.

 

Course Prerequisites:

Successful completion of English I and English II.

 

Course Text:

Elements of Literature Fifth Course: Literature of the United States (Holt, Rhinehart, and Winston)

Anchor Texts:  The Scarlet Letter by N. Hawthorne, Our Town by T. Wilder, Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by M. Twain, and American Dream by J. Cullen

 

Course Overview and Objectives:

English III is the study of American literature. Students will read selected pieces from major American literary figures as they fit into a thematic study and will compose written and visual responses to that literature that will encourage students to think independently, critically, and creatively.   Incorporated into the study of American literature will be weekly vocabulary and ACT preparatory exercises.

 

At the completion of the course, students should have a broad knowledge of major American writers and literary pieces. Students should be able to express themselves logically and coherently in a variety of styles in writing and orally. Students should have mastery of English vocabulary and grammar.

 

Course Requirements:

The student is responsible for all homework, assignments, writing assignments, tests, and enrichment projects for all unites covered:

  • Thematic units aligned with the Common Core State Standards and state guidebook:  Religious Influence in the United States, Society and Self-Reliance, Tradition and Change, and the American Dream
  • Novels as assigned (Students may be asked to purchase some novels.)
  • Grammar units on mechanics and usage/ACT practice
  • Vocabulary (weekly)
  • Editing strips (daily)
  • Independent reading (see hand out)
  • Research assignment(s)

 

Fees

A $40 school/supply fee is required of all Juniors.  It is to be paid to the English teacher during the first two weeks of school!  Students may be required to purchase novels for class reading.

Make-up Policy

It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed due to absence (including school-related activities). Students may make up tests after school (2:40-3:15), either in the make-up room or in the classroom; however students need to make their preferred testing day and location clear to the teacher in advance!  Students should see Mr. Horaist or a classmate to get notes and class work missed. Students have 5 school days to make up work missed; extended absences will be given more time after a student conference with Mr. Horaist. Work that is not made up by the deadline will receive a grade of ZERO! Long-term assignments that are due during the absence will be due the day the student returns to school. Late homework will not be accepted. Other late assignments will be penalized one letter grade per day. After the fourth day, the assignment will be given the grade ZERO.  **Students must present a “feather form” after an absence in order to obtain make-up work.  Thirteen (13) unexcused absences will result in failing the course.

 

Grading

Students will have the opportunity to earn grades through homework, class assignments, writing assignments, tests, projects, journals, and quizzes.  Major grades (tests, projects, writing assignments, unit assessments) will count 75% of the grade, daily grades (homework, classwork, participation, quizzes, etc) will count 25% of the grade.  Students will be allowed to do grade recovery on failed tests with a score of 50 or below.  Grade recovery is not possible for all assignments including independent reading and assigned novels.

                A 100-93               B 92-85                 C 84-75                 D 74-67                 F 66 and below

 

Grade Recovery

Students will have the opportunity to recover points on tests with a grade of 50 or below.   Students will make test corrections after school in Mr. Horaist’s room. CORE is available if a student requests a time in advance. Students will earn half credit back on corrected items with a maximum score of 70.  Students will have one week from the day of a recorded score in PowerSchool™ to attempt grade recovery. 

 

Testing Procedures

On a test day, students will be required to put all personal belongings at the front of the room and cell phones in the pockets provided in the classroom.  NO personal belongings or phone will be returned until all tests are turned in.  Any students seen with a phone or electronic device during a test will receive a ZERO!

 

Discipline Plan

 

Rules

  1. When someone is addressing the class, stop, look, and listen.
  2. Touch or move only those items that belong to you.
  3. Bring all needed materials to class.
  4. Stay on task throughout the period.
  5. Use respectful language.
  6. Reserve all personal grooming for breaks between classes.
  7. Reserve all food and drink for lunch.
  8. Cell phones ARE NOT permitted for ANY reason!  Failure to comply will result in the phone’s confiscation!
  9. Follow all school rules and procedures.

 

Procedures

  1. Enter the room quietly, sit down in your assigned seat, and get materials ready for class. You should be ready to work by the time the tardy bell sounds.
  2. Students not in assigned seats by the tardy bell will be considered tardy and will serve lunch detention.
  3. Begin immediately on the assignment on the board.
  4. Bring outside reading with you every day.
  5. Do not ask to leave the room.
  6. Cheating on homework, assignments, and test will result in a ZERO for both parties.
  7. Clean your area and put away class books before leaving the room.  Cleanliness is next to Godliness!

 

Computer Lab

Any student who deliberately misuses computer equipment or in any way causes damage to the equipment will lose his/her privilege to use the lab and will face disciplinary action.
