 SHS THEATRE

2021-2022 Syllabus

Welcome to the SHS THEATRE page! The 2021-2022 school year is almost like starting over. Not only did the COVID pandemic halt the production of our biggest effort yet, PETER PAN, but the restrictions on school activities continued into the 2020-2021 school year and prevented our productions for the entire year. Though we are still feeling the effects of the pandemic, we are hoping that our plans for the production and staging of LITTLE WOMEN will become reality this fall. SHS THEATRE has already held auditions for the course and has an excellent group of young actors to make that happen.

To date, SHS DRAMA has produced a handful of memorable plays: Little Red Riding Hood - 2007; Peter Pan - 2008; A Hillbilly Christmas Carol - 2008; Cinderella - 2009; The Hunchback of Notre Dame - 2010; and Robin Hood - 2011; The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - 2011; Treasure Island - 2012; Lion King - 2013, Aladdin - 2015; The Emperor's New Groove - 2015; The Jungle Book - 2016; A Christmas Carol - 2017; The Wizard of Oz - 2017; Beauty & the Beast - 2018; Cinderella - 2019; and A Christmas Carol -- 2019.  Thank you so much to the Livingston Parish schools who have supported our program in the past. You are a huge part of our success, and we are grateful. Like most arts programs, ours survives on only the funds we generate. Thus, we'll need more help and understanding than ever from our supportive parents and community who've been there for us in the past. To support our program, students will be selling ads and sponsorships which will be used to rebuild our program, which was affected severely by the loss of revenue due to the pandemic.

For any performing arts program to be successful, volunteers are an absolute necessity. Without parents and other volunteers stepping in, most school functions wouldn't even get off the ground.  We have enjoyed wonderful parent support for years and are very blessed to have the amount of support we do in such a small community where the need is so great and where the focus on the arts is minimal.

This year, students will receive an introduction to basic theater technique, history, theory, and stagecraft.  In addition to regular theatre, juniors and seniors have the option to take THEATRE as dual enrollment course for 3 hours of college credit through Southeastern Louisiana University. Students who are interested should see Mr. Joe. Whether enrolled as a regular theatre students or as a DE student, everyone in THEATRE will be required to participate in the play production, whether acting on stage or working behind the scenes.  There are many jobs in a play production.  I hope to assign parts during the first semester so that actors have more than enough time to prepare for their parts.  I'll also be asking students to seek volunteers from the community to help out with the play production, everything from sewing to donations of lumber and other prop materials.  If you're interested in helping, please contact me at [email protected].
