Dear Parents,
Welcome to a new school year. I am looking forward to this school year and working with your child. I will be teaching your child all the subjects: Reading, Language, Spelling, Writing, Math, and Social Living. Below you will find specific information about each of the subjects that I will be teaching.
Reading:
Students will receive a new vocabulary words every other week. This list consist of 8 words along with their meanings. We will cover the information in class and through reviews. However, students are responsible for studying at home as well. Your child will also be taking comprehension test every other week. The comprehension test will test their ability to see how much they understand a story that they have never read before. These tests will be a mixture of multiple choice and constructed response items (to be answered in complete sentences.) Comprehension test will be given on Thursday's.
In addition to comprehension tests, grades will also come from skills being tested, and vocabulary. Vocabulary test will be given on Thursdays.
Accelerated Reader will be used this year. The students will read and earn points by taking tests on books they read. There are school-wide and grade level incentives to encourage them to read. Please stress the importance of reading at home as well. Your child will record their scores on a sheet which will be in a manila folder. Your child will keep this folder in their book sack for you to view their progress.
Language:
We will use the text book as well as worksheets to teach and reinforce the skill each week. The students will be tested after each chapter in the book. Some work will be done in class and some will be assigned as homework. Writing assignments will be graded as well. All graded writing assignments will be completed in class.
Spelling:
Students will be given spelling tests on Fridays. The students will write their spelling words 3 times each for homework or each student will be supplied with a spelling worksheet to complete. The structure of the test will vary from week to week. One week the spelling test may be called out. The next week the structure of the tests may be students using the words in a sentence or the student may have to identify which word is spelled correctly. By testing with this format it prepares your child for the structure of the ILEAP tests.
Social Living:
Your child’s grade will come from questions on the study guide, activity sheets, skill sheets, and tests we have taken in Science and Social Studies. Students will complete a study guide for each unit. Please do not wait until the night before the tests to begin studying. Your child should start studying this information the first day it is handed out. Test dates will be announced on the study guides/assignment sheet. Besides tests, social living grades will also come from group activities, worksheets, and projects.
Math:
Each day we will go over a Focus lesson and an Activity lesson in the Math book. Your child will have a homework sheet to complete each night in his/her math book. This homework sheet reinforces the lessons we went over during the day.
Your child should be practicing his/her addition and subtractions facts, and when we begin multiplication they should be practicing these as well. If you have access to a computer, there is a site called mathfactcafe.com where there are flashcards, and practice tests that can be printed. I encourage you to use this site.
Behavior Chart:
Behavior:
Sign and Return Conduct Folder: This folder should be brought home by your child each night. Inside this folder is the conduct agreement (first page) which should be read and signed where indicated by you and your child. Please check and initial your child’s folder daily. This folder is very important.
A smiley face means that your child had a wonderful day. He/she stayed on green and followed directions as instructed.
A straight face means that your child was given a warning about his/her behavior and they flipped their card to yellow. When their card is flipped to yellow he/she will lose 5 minutes off their recess time to conference with the teacher.
A frown face means that your child was given a second warning. He/she will flip their card to orange.
Your child will then not have recess and he/she will complete a behavior reflection sheet.
A jagged face means that your child was given a third warning about his/her behavior and they flipped their card to red. When their card is flipped to red he/she will have no recess privileges for that day and a minor infraction form will be sent home for you to read and sign. The form is then to be returned to me the next day for me to keep on file.
**If your child receives more than three minor infraction forms in a week then your child will receive a major infraction form and will be sent to the office.
At the end of every day I will fill out your child’s behavior chart and I will initial. It will be your child’s responsibility to give you his/her chart for you to view and initial in the space provided. If the chart does not return to school the following day with a signature your child will lose minutes off of his/her recess or another privilege will be taken away.
Individual Rewards: When your child receives all happy faces for that week your child will be rewarded.
Class Rewards: I will have a class reward chart to keep the points that the class earns. For the class to get rewarded they must earn 100 points. This will teach them to work as a team! For example, while walking to the lunch room if students are walking quietly in a line I will verbally praise them and they will earn 5 points. Another example would be when I direct students to quietly take out their text book and all follow this direction then again I will verbally praise them and they will earn another 5 points. When the class earns 100 points they will get to vote on having 1 activity and a snack. For example, they may vote on a movie and popcorn.
Homework:
Students will be responsible to complete homework nightly. If homework isn’t fully completed recess time will be taken. The students will be notified when homework will be graded. Students are expected to copy their homework before packing their things to go home at the end of the day.
Test Papers:
On Wednesdays sign papers will go home in a yellow packet labeled LeBlanc Elementary. Please review your child’s test papers with he/she and sign and return on Thursday. A new set of tests papers will not be sent home until the previous ones are signed and returned.
Entering the Room: (This will be done each morning your child arrives at school)
- Look at the Promethean board and it will say exactly what you are expected to do. No talking and remain seated except to sharpen pencils.
- Listen to the duty teacher
- Bell ringer: complete skill worksheet/begin math fact practice
While You Were Out:
- Students are responsible when they return to ask the teacher about work that has been missed and needs to be made up. Work for absent students will be placed in the “While You Were Out” folders.
AR: More information will be given to your child after school starts.
Absences- When your child is absent; you may call the office and ask for all of your child’s work to be put together. I will fill out a sheet with all the work missed
