Here are some helpful ideas for being a Reading Role Model:

  • It is important to read to your children every day to reinforce what was learned in school.
  • Read with your children and to yourself.  Let them see you enjoying books, magazines, newspapers, etc.
  • Make the time you spend reading together a joyful time.  Encourage your children by asking questions.  Have them engaged in writing.   For example, they can write a sentence about their favorite part of a story and draw a picture to illustrate it.
  • Make is possible to read anytime, anywhere.  Bring books into doctor's offices and other places where you expect long waits.
  • Take your children to the library often.  Let your them sign up for library cards.
  • Look for other reading role models to point out to your children such as friends, relatives, and people your children look up to.
  • Give compliments and praise your children for their efforts.  They will strive to their maximum potential when they are motivated.
