Individual needs are met through instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills. Students will participate in Whole-Group Instruction/Small-Group Instruction as well as rotate through two other stations: Instructional Software, and Independent Reading.

Class Goals: Primary goals for this class are:

  • To improve the reading and writing skills of all students.
  • To expand each students’ vocabulary.
  • To expose students to a variety of readings.
  • To teach students to think and read critically.
  • To help students develop and support opinions on what they have read.
  • To improve students’ skills in verbal and written expression.

DESCRIPTION OF ROTATIONS:

Whole-Group Instruction: During Whole Group Instruction, students will participate in bell work, Do Nows, journals, vocabulary, homework, discussions, fluency practice.

Small-Group Rotation: During the Small Group Rotation, students will work with the teacher completing ReaL Book activities, writing, skills tests, small projects, conferences, and completing individual skills assessments.

Read 180 software Rotation: Students will use the READ 180 Software independently, on their iPads. The software will provide the students with intensive, individualized skills practice. Students use topics on the computer to practice reading comprehension, spelling, proofreading and word attack skills. Each topic guides the students through a variety of activities including a video, the Reading Zone, Word Zone and Spelling Zone. Students must complete activities in each zone in order to reach the Success Zone and move to the next reading passage.

Independent Reading Rotation: During this time, students will read from the Read 180 library, as well as from the classroom library. There are four independent reading accountability exercises that must be completed with each book read by the student.
