Westside Accelerated Reading Program
According to Westside policy, the Accelerated Reading Program (AR) this semester is based on your child earning 10 pts per 9 weeks grading period.
The (AR) program:
Is a learning information system that provides teachers with information needed to develop appropriate intervention strategies to improve students’ reading abilities.
Feedback from the reports allows teachers to determine how often students are reading, whether they are reading books at the appropriate level, and if they understand what they are reading.
The (AR) program starts with STAR:
STAR is the Standardized Test for Achievement of Reading
Administered at least three times per year
A 10 minute computer, norm-referenced reading test used to assess students’ ZPD level to determine what books the student should be choosing to achieve the most success in reading
Test performance gives a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This is the reading level at which the student will gain the maximum benefit from reading.
You can use the AR Book Find link that can be found on the LivingstonParishPublic School’s homepage (www.lpsb.org) to access a database where you can determine the reading level of any AR book. Click Parent Tab, look under middle column, and click AR book find.
Please help us to emphasize the importance of AR, as it will be an important part of your child’s reading success.
