Math
We all use math everyday, most of the time without even realizing it! Math is about solving problems. Each individual problem becomes a step towards solving bigger problems. This year we will apply those problem solving skills to a given situation.
The students will have math homework daily. Most homework will be completed in the math workbook. The homework will be posted on this website. (I plan this a week in advance. It is subject to change!!) Also, they will be given a math sheet on Monday to complete and turn in on Thursday for a grade.
Students should know their multiplication facts 0 -12. So much of what we do builds on multiplication facts. Please work with your child to make sure they know their facts. Flashcards are a good way to do this, especially in the car! There are also websites online, which offer free games and activities that will help you review facts with your child.
Science
I enjoy being a hands-on teacher and students become active participants instead of passive learners. I hope science will be a blast this year without a true explosion. :)
We will be using the scientific method as we do inquiry learning in class. Students are expected to participate in all class activities. We will research some topics, create projects, as well as take quizzes and tests. Students will be given related handouts, organization charts and study guides. The items should be kept in their binder and should be studied daily. I will have notebook checks from time to time to make sure students are keeping up with this important material. They will not recieve credit if the material is at home.
If the kids are learning and having fun doing it, then I am having fun at my job!
Social Studies
Fifth grade is a step back in time. Your students will learn so many new things throughout the year. For the first time, they will learn American history from the beginning of our countries existence. We will journey from the ancient empires, follow the mammoths, and end fighting for our independence as a new country.
You will not see much homework in science or social studies. You will have at least one home project.
