Greetings from the Memorial High School History Department!

Welcome to Ms. Cabana's website.  For the 2024-2025 school year, I am teaching United States History II, Urban Studies and the Syracuse University Project Advance courses,  Intro to the Analysis of Public Policy and Sociology. I am also the chairperson of the school's Wellness Committee and the Junior Class Advisor and the Color Guard Coach.

As an adjunct instructor for Syracuse University, my primary role is to create a learning environment for students in accordance with the objectives of the university and my course area.

Sociology is an expanding field used by those who craft public policies and programs. In this course, we’ll look at human interaction in a wide range of situations, from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious cults; and from the divisions of race, gender, and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture. Students will learn how to take a disciplined view of social inequality, discover the forces behind social change and resistance, and see how social systems work. Few fields have such a broad scope and relevance for research, theory, and the application of knowledge.

The overall goal Public Affairs 101, Introduction to the Analysis of Public Policy is to provide the two most important goals---to give the students the skills and perspectives to do well and do good or to be more formal, to prepare for careers and to be effective citizens. It provides students with basic research, communication, and decision-making skills used in public policy analysis. In addition, students are required to read and analyze newspaper articles on local, state, and federal public policies. Students chose a public policy topic of interest to them and came up with a policy they would support.

Class Rules:

  • Be on Time
  • Be Prepared
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Respectful - of students’ right to learn, the teachers’ right to teach, school and personal property, and differences in others.

What can you expect from me?

The same thing I expect from you - fairness, respect, and a commitment to doing a good job.  I cannot promise fun and excitement for every day in class, but I can promise you 100% of my attention and effort.  Please remember that questions, thoughts for discussion, or requests for clarification are ALWAYS welcomed and encouraged.  Lively discussions make for better classes and better learning.

Grading Policy for each quarter is:

 20 % = Class participation

 20 % = Homework

 20 % = Projects
 20 % = Quizzes

 20 % = Tests
