     Because writing is an essential element in the first grade curriculum, we write everyday. Children love language. As they grow and develop, there is a natural tendency for them to expand this love of language into written expression. In my first grade classroom children are exposed to different kinds of writing - narrative, opinion, informative, and how to .. Through lots of modeling and practice, they learn the elements of writing along with the writing process. Because first graders are on different writing levels, instruction is individualized to support each student's needs. Children are encouraged and supported in a secure environment where they are willing to take risks and learn to value themselves as writers. Although they are encouraged to use what they know about letters and sounds to spell words, they each have a Word Book to assist with spelling high frequency words. Skills and grammar are taught through whole class and small group instruction using the LPSB curriculum and the Wit and Wisdom program.
