PARENTAL ADVICE FOR CHILDREN
Internet Safety
- Internet connected computers should always be located in a visible, open area
- Do not permit children to have Internet connected computers in their bedrooms
- Remind children to never give anyone their school computer password
- Children should never give out personal information when on line (this includes E-mail, chat rooms, blogging, instant messaging, or on personal Web pages:
Do not post names, addresses, phone numbers, cell phone numbers
Do not post school names and locations, school schedules, or work schedules of family members or themselves
- Remind children of the possibility of on-line predators; do not talk to strangers on line. (Reminder: cyber crime is committed by people of all ages, all medians of life, all races, and all cultures. Also, one in every 5 youths ages 10-17 have been sexually solicited on line.)
- Children should not permit anyone to take their picture using web cameras, phone cameras, or digital cameras for the purpose of posting a picture on line. (Once a picture is posted on line—it is there forever!)
- If your child becomes a victim of cyber harassment--
1. Keep everything and make records of dates, times, and messages
2. Do not permit children to open, forward or respond to a cyber bully’s message
3. Have your child report any bullying to a trusted adult and the proper authorities
4. If your child is threatened with harm, call the police and take the threat seriously.
