WELCOME TO FOURTH GRADE

Your child’s promotion from third to fourth grade represents a major change in routines and expectations, and the beginning of this school year is a critical time. Support from home is essential for your child’s school success. To help your child get off to a great start, I have put together this overview of some of the classroom policies, procedures, and programs.

PARENT AND STUDENT INFORMATION

You will receive several forms to complete regarding your child, how you can help our class and emergency information. The information you share with me about your child will help me get to know and understand him/her better and will be confidential. There will be many opportunities for you to become involved with our class during the year, your participation and involvement are highly encouraged and very much appreciated.

GRADES

Nine weeks grades are given in all subjects. Interim reports are issued after four and a half weeks into each nine weeks period. Student work is graded on a point value system. The nine weeks grade is calculated by dividing the total points earned by the total points possible. The grading scale is as follows:

A = 93-100%

B = 85-92%

C = 75-84%

D = 67-74%

F = 0-66%

At least two grades per subject is taken each week. Work that is for practice only may just have a check or a smiley face. Incorrect answers will be circled so that students can redo those problems.

WORK ENVELOPES

Your child’s graded work will be sent home to you on a weekly basis for you to review with him/her. The work will be sent in a labeled sheet protector with a form attached for you to sign indicating that you received the papers and looked over them with your child. The signed form should be returned to school the next day along with any D or F papers. You may keep the papers at home that have checks on them or that have an A, B or C grade.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND FEES

The fourth grade instructional supply fee is $50.00. This fee is used to purchase necessary supplies for the 2021-2022 school session. In addition please purchase the items listed on the fourth grade supply list and a book sack for your child. Book sacks on wheels are not permitted in fourth grade. Throughout the year you may be requested to contribute additional supplies such as Kleenexes, hand sanitizer, clorox wipes and/or materials for special art activities.

SCHOOL CONDUCT: EXPECTATIONS AND PROCEDURES

The essence of my philosophy about children’s behavior at school is that each child will treat others with respect and that each child is responsible for helping us all maintain an environment that is conducive to learning. The system that will be used for classroom and school behavior management consist of :

-A set of class and school rules that each student will learn.

-Appropriate consequences for individual choices, and

-Daily reports to parents.

I have found that young children respond best to a simple systematic procedure that rewards good choices and addresses the child’s inappropriate behavior in a non-threatening manner. My routine consists of giving a student a 'mark,' for behavior that is not acceptable.  If all rules are followed and good work habits are displayed, your child will receive no marks for the day. Marks are given and recorded daily to give you an indication of how your child’s day went. Please remember that at this age, children are given many chances to redirect their behavior before a mark is given.

0 marks: No consequence

1 mark: Warning

2 marks: 5 minutes of recess

3 marks: Recess Detention

4+ marks: Office/Parent contacted

CONFERENCES

 Parent conferences will be scheduled as needed to discuss your child’s academic progress and social development. If at anytime you feel you need to schedule a conference, please call the school office to schedule one.
