~ On or around your child’s birthday you may send in a birthday snack for an after lunch celebration. This will take place in our classroom. Small plates, napkins, and forks (if needed) are always a great idea too. Please do not send in anything that has to be cut or cut it in advance. Also according to Georgia laws every item brought in for the class must have a nutritional label. No homemade items please! If you know in advance when you will be sending in your child’s birthday snack please let me know.

Reading Log:

As part of their homework each night students are asked to read for 20 minutes. Students will have a reading log that they will be responsible for getting signed. At the end of the week/month if the reading log is initialed by parents, students will earn a reward.

Classroom Behavior:

Because our goal is to provide each student with a positive and productive learning environment, please review the following information so that you and your child will fully understand our expectations this year…

Procedures:

à  Each day is a brand-new day in our classroom. Everyone starts out with 2 tickets.

à  If an unacceptable behavior is displayed, the student will turn in 1 ticket. If unacceptable behavior continues, they will turn in their last ticket for the day.

àThe student’s behavior will be documented daily in his/her agenda. If your student comes home with a 2 in his/her agenda then that means they followed all the rules and their 2 tickets for the day. If your student comes home with a 1 or 0 then that means their behavior had to be redirected and they had to turn in 1 or both tickets. This will also be documented with an explanation on his/her agenda.

àAt any point during the day students can earn extra tickets for positive behavior.

àStudents will be able to use their tickets to purchase fun class coupons.

Rules to follow:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be Responsible
  3. Be Respectful

*As a class we will discuss each and what it means and will come up with examples.

Consequences:

1.) First redirect =Verbal Warning/Just a reminder of what the rules are.

2.) Second redirect =Move behavior stick to yellow, Walk 5 minutes at recess

3.) Third redirect = Move behavior stick orange, Walk 10 minutes at recess

4.) Forth redirect = Move behavior stick to red, Note home or call to parents

G.O. Binder

                                                                                      “Get”    “Organized”

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to 2nd  Grade!  This letter is intended to explain the GO Binder that students will be responsible for this year. The GO Binder is our way of staying organized at home and at school. It is a 3-ring 1” binder that contains valuable information that is always at our fingertips.

Your child will need a 3-ring notebook with pockets on the side and a clear slip-cover on the front, (Avery brand is most durable).  Please stay away from zip-up notebooks because they are not quick and easy to get into.  You will also need five, 3-ring plastic dividers to go inside this notebook.  Please label your child’s dividers in their binder as follows: #1Communication/Homework, #2 Spelling, #3 Math, #4 Reading/LA, #5 Science/S.S. . The built-in side pockets will be labeled Right Back to School (front pocket) and Stay at Home (back pocket).

Communication: This will be the first section in the G.O. Binder. Every day I will mark students’ agenda with their behavior. Refer to the “Classroom Behavior” section in the Survival Guide for more information on behavior. Also, on the Agenda sheet students will write their homework and any upcoming events. Please initial the Agenda each night along.  Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night as part of their homework. Please also initial the Reading Log if your student has completed their 20 minutes of reading.

Spelling/Vocabulary:In this section students will keep their spelling words and any spelling practice that they are working on.

Math, Reading/LA, Science/S.S.: These sections of the binder will prove to be very important throughout the year. Resource guides will be kept here for your child to use at home and at school. Please do not take out resource guides or resources from these sections.

Right Back to School and Stay at Home:  Papers in the Right Back to School pocket will need to be read and or signed and brought back to school. Papers in the Stay at Home pocket should be kept at home. These sections need to be checked daily and emptied out. Only in the “yellow” folder will graded work be sent home. Please keep these papers at home except for the ones that have been stickered with “Sign and Return”.

Please remember, we are trying to build responsibility and it is best to create a routine early in the year. It is helpful to choose a place for your child to work and to establish a set time to go through the GO Binder each day. This will ensure that they are ready and organized for each new school day. I feel confident you will enjoy this organizational tool and your child will benefit from learning and applying excellent study skills early in life.

Thanks,

Mrs. Skellenger
