SMJH's Classrooms Handbook

 

This handbook explains classroom rules, procedure, routines, expectations, and responsibilities. It is your guide for success in SMJH's classrooms.

 

1. Courtesy and Respect for Authority

· All students should be addressed by fellow classmates using his/her proper name.

· All adults should be addressed as Mr. or Mrs.

· Students should always respond by saying, "yes ma' am, no ma' am or yes sir, no sir."

 

2. Required Materials

· All students are responsible for bringing the necessary materials to class every day.

· A student will not be allowed to leave class to go get a missing item from his/her locker.

· It is your responsibility to make sure you are prepared for class and ready to learn each day.

3. Classroom Rules

· Show respect for Everyone. Be kind with your words and actions.

· Be seated and prepared when the TARDY BELL rings.

· Materials are required everyday. (textbook, binder, pen, pencil, and ID)

· Your hand must be raised before speaking.

· Assignments must be completed and turned in on time.

· No eating or drinking and no gum chewing during the class period.

· The Teacher, Not the bell, dismisses the class.

· Special Treats

·  Trivia games for extra points.

 

CONSEQUENCES

· Warning

· Student/Teacher Conference.

· Parent/Teacher Conference.

· Referred to the Principal.

 

4. Entering the Classroom

Upon entering the classroom each student should

· Have their ID on  and in proper uniform (shirt tucked in, belt on, proper shoes, etc.)

· Immediately be seated in assigned desk

· Read the Bell ringer assignment and the objectives posted on the board

· Begin the Bell ringer assignment or the Enrichment exercise

 

5. Tardy

"Tardy" means that the student is not in the classroom when the tardy bell stops ringing.

· The door will shut once the signal stop.

· If you are not in the classroom once the door is shut, you must knock on the door and I will open the door.

· You must not disrupt the class to discuss the reason for your tardiness.

· If you miss an assignment because you are tardy, it is your responsibility to make up the assignment. You may ask your buddy or the teacher after class not during class.

 

6. Daily ID

After the tardy bell has rung, one student from each row will check the students on his/her row for their ID ·

  

 

7. When You Are Absent

· You must present the teacher with your excuse before the tardy bell rings.

· You are responsible for picking up the missed work from the Buddy folder before class begins. Also, speak to your buddy before class begins not during class.

· All make up work must be completed within three days of returning to school provided the absence is excused. If the work is not made up in three days, or if your absence is unexcused you will earn a zero.

· You will have to schedule an appointment with the teacher to make up a quiz, test, or an experiment.

 

8. Turning In Assignments

· All assignments must have the following heading

Name (first and last)
 Class Name and Block
  Name of the Assignment
Date

· All homework assignments that are to be turned in should be placed in the "homework" tray before the tardy bell stop ringing. The teacher will not accept an assignment after the tardy bell stop ringing.

· All assignments completed in class that are to be turned in are to be placed in the "classroom" tray. It is your responsibility to ensure that your assignment is turned in to the right place at the right time.

 

 

9. Participating in class discussion

· Students will raise their hand, remain quiet, and wait to be recognized

· Students must respect the opinions or answers given by their classmates whether they agree with them or not

 

10. Asking Questions

· Raise your hand to ask a question for help

· Please remain quiet and wait to be recognized

· During a group assignment, ask the group members first then if no one knows the answer, one person should raise his/her hand for help.

· Personal problems or personal questions not related to Science will not be address during the class period. A student can schedule an appointment with teacher after class.

 

11. Working in Cooperative Groups

In this classroom, there will be several cooperative group assignments.

· All students should work cooperatively within the group and be a contributing member.

· No student should leave his/her group during an assignment unless directed by the teacher.

· You are responsible for your own work and the results of the group

· The teacher will determine the members of the group

 

12. Movement About The Classroom

· No one will be allowed about the room once direct instruction begin unless the student raises his/her hand and ask permission to do so.

· All pencils should be sharpened before class begins.

· All students are required to keep their desks and area clean. Disposing of trash should be done before or after class.

 

13. Restroom/Getting Water

· You should go before or after class, so you do not miss any instructional time.

 

14. Leaving The Classroom

· No one will be allowed to leave the classroom once they have walked through the door, unless called by the office

· If you become ill or injured in class, please notify the teacher immediately by raising your hand

 

15. Announcement Over the Public Address System

· No matter what is going on in class, you must stop and be quiet for the announcements.

  

16. Computer Use

· Computer use is strictly limited to educational tasks only

· The teacher will assign computer time as needed

· No one should use the computer without the teacher's permission and supervision

· In the classroom and in the library, the teacher will assign each student a computer according to their class number

 

17. Early Finishers

· Look at the front board for an assignment

· You should always have the book that you are currently reading for the Sustained Silent Reading Program with you

 

20. Grading Policy

· Every graded assignment, test, etc. will receive a grade that will be expressed as a ratio of earned possible points.

· Each student must record every grade in his/her binder. The teacher will check it.

· Questions regarding a grade earned should be addressed by scheduling an appointment with 
the teacher.

· There will be no discussion of a student's grade during the class period.

 

21. Going to the Library or the Common Area

· Remain with the class at all times

· Do not stop at your locker, the restroom or the water fountain

· Walk in an orderly fashion on the right side of the hallway very quietly

· Everyone should be at the designated location before the teacher.

 

22. Emergency Procedure

· During an emergency drill or situation, immediately STOP working

· Wait calmly for instructions from the teacher and follow the directions

 

23. Visitors

· When a visitor comes in the room, continue your work and do not be disruptive

· Do not interact with a visitor unless you are told to do so

 

24. Class Dismissal

· All students must remain quiet in their respective seats until the teacher dismiss the class.

· No student should be standing near the door at anytime during the class period

   

25. When the teacher is Absent

· All students must follow all classroom rules, policies and procedures.

· Students who do not follow the classroom rules, policies and procedures will be referred to the office.

· No one should ask the substitute to leave the classroom to go to another teacher's classroom.

· All work must be completed and turned into the substitute by the end of the class period.

· There should be no talking and no group work during the class period

· If the class is dispersed, students should report to their assigned teacher immediately and begin the emergency lesson plan (elp) assignment. If the elp is not available, then read your book from the silent sustain reading program.
