6th Grade ASL Class Expectations & Policies

Respecting the Language

American Sign Language is a real, vibrant language used every day by millions of people to communicate. God loves and values everyone, and He calls us to treat others with kindness and respect. Making a joke out of how people communicate is inappropriate and disrespectful to the Deaf community. In this classroom, we treat ASL with the same honor and effort as any other language or subject.

Zero Tolerance Policy: Inappropriate Signing & Gestures

To keep our classroom safe, respectful, and focused on learning, off-task visual behavior, which includes using inappropriate hand gestures, making up "funny" signs, or using offensive gestures, will not be tolerated.

  • First & Only Warning: The standard and expectations are clearly explained to all students on the very first day of class. This serves as every student’s first and only warning for the duration of class together.

  • Subsequent Violations: Any inappropriate signing or mocking gestures after Day 1 will result in an immediate email home to parents/guardians and a direct referral to the principal's office for further disciplinary action.

Thank you so much for your support and partnership in creating a safe, respectful, fun, and encouraging environment where all of our students can thrive.
