School-based speech-language pathologists focus on the communication goals outlined in your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). These goals help your child communicate and understand so that they may succeed in the school setting, and typically target areas such as:
- Producing speech sounds correctly (articulation)
- Answering WH- questions
- Categorization and vocabulary skills
- Grammar development
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
- Organizing and describing language
Therapy sessions are typically 30 minutes, held once or twice a week, and may occur in small groups or individually, depending on what’s written in your child’s IEP.
In West New York, we follow a 3:1 service delivery model. This means that for three weeks, students receive direct therapy services. During the fourth week, time is dedicated to:
- Teacher and staff consultations
- Classroom observations
- Student assessments
- Therapy planning and preparation
- Home program development
- Parent communication and training
- Interdisciplinary team meetings
This model supports a collaborative approach to student communication success in all areas of their lives.
