What does a school counselor do?

School Counselors promote success and wellness for all students, providing academic, social, emotional and developmental support. Our job is to ensure equity and access for all students.

When should I seek out a my counselor?

My goal is to get to know each and every student in our incoming 6th grade class. If you ever feel like you need help, guidance or support you can come to see me! Here are some times you might seek out a school counselor (this list includes only a few examples):

  • General School concerns ("The transition to this new school has been tough" or any scheduling concerns)
  • Academic Concerns ("I'm struggling with Spanish class" or "I'm struggling to stay organized" or "I need help managing my homework")
  • Emotional Concerns ("I'm feeling not myself because I'm (sad/mad/scared/anxious/embarrassed/lonely/etc)")
  • Self Esteem or Identity Issues
  • Social Concerns and Relationship Issues ("I don't know where to sit at lunch" or "I'm struggling to make friends" or "I'm having an issue with a friend or peer and I need help" or "I'm nervous about a change I noticed in a friend"
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings

If you are struggling with something that isn't on this list, you can still come see your counselor!

Please know anything you share with a counselor will be confidential (meaning it stays between you and me) UNLESS:

  • Someone is hurting you
  • You may hurt yourself or others
  • We talk about telling someone else who can help
