What will my student learn and do in Art?

 

Students will explore a variety of artistic mediums, techniques, and styles while developing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Throughout the year, students will complete projects in areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, crafts, origami, and art history. By the end of the year, each student will have built a portfolio that demonstrates their growth as an artist.

How is my student graded?

 

Students earn grades in three categories:

  • Projects & Assignments (40%) – Finished artwork and major class assignments. Projects are graded on craftsmanship, creativity, effort, and how well students apply the skills taught in class.

  • Participation (40%) – Students begin each week with full participation points. Remaining engaged, following directions, working during studio time, and using class time wisely help students maintain their grade.

  • Sketchbooks (20%) – Sketchbooks include bellringers, brainstorming, planning, notes, and creative practice completed throughout the year. They are checked approximately every three weeks.

 

What happens if my student misses a deadline?

Art projects often require several class periods to complete, so managing class time is very important. Students who do not finish by the deadline will initially receive a zero. Late work may receive up to half credit unless special circumstances have been discussed with the teacher. Late work will not be accepted within 48 hours of the end of each grading period.

 

What does participation mean in Art?

Participation is much more than simply attending class. Students are expected to:

  • Begin bellringers immediately.

  • Follow classroom instructions.

  • Stay on task during studio time.

  • Put forth their best effort.

  • Respect classroom materials and classmates.

  • Ask questions when they need help.

Sleeping, refusing to work, wasting class time or studio time, talking during instruction, or not participating may result in participation points being deducted.

 

What supplies does my student need?

 

Students are encouraged to bring basic art supplies when possible, such as pencils, colored pencils, glue, scissors, and permanent markers. However, no student will be denied participation because they cannot purchase supplies. Classroom materials are always available, and donations of extra art materials are greatly appreciated.

 

How can parents support their student in an art classroom?

 

Parents play an important role in student success. You can help by:

  • Reviewing projects and assignments with your student.

  • Encouraging them to use studio time wisely.

  • Discussing classroom expectations at home.

  • Signing up for Remind and Google Classroom to receive announcements and important updates.

 

 How does classroom discipline work?

 

Students are expected to make responsible choices each day. Classroom discipline follows a progressive system:

 

 

Repeated or severe behavior issues may result in additional administrative action.
