Welcome to Mrs. Henderson's Talented Art webpage! Here you will find upcoming events & news about my class as well as student work throughout the year. I hope you're excited to see your artist grow this year as we learn together.
My theme for the year is "Speak Art"! It is such an amazing thing for students this young to be so in love with art, already so talented, and desiring to develop their skills. To be successful at developing any skill or craft, it's not only about having the technical know-how, but being able to speak the language of your craft as well. When you learn to do math, you have to learn the language of math - what is a quotient? what is a denominator? what is a prime number? In order for you to be successful at math, if your teacher asks you to find these things, you have to know what she means. When you learn to be an artist, you have to learn the language of art - what is the focal point of your work? do you think your work needs more line weight? can you set up a 3 object still life? In order to be successful at talented art, if your teacher asks you these things, you have to know what she means. Many of the kids in talented art at this age know how to do so much instinctually, but I want them to be able to understand why their art works so that they can not only continue, but improve & grow!
Speaking Art looks like learning the basics of why art works using the Elements of Art & the Principles of Design as our base vocabulary. By the end of this year, my goal is for ALL of my students to be able to fluently use and understand the language of the Elements & Principles to analyze, evaluate, and create their own artwork as well as analyze and evaluate the artwork of others.
