- Unit 2: Because of Winn-Dixie
In this section, students will read “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter and excerpts from Dear Peter Rabbit by Alma Flor Ada. Students will learn about another mischievous rabbit, Peter, in these fantasy stories then compare and contrast Peter Rabbit and Lapin. Students will also write a letter from Lapin’s point of view giving advice to Peter Rabbit about getting out of trouble.We will read Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo and a series of related literary and informational texts to explore the question: Why is it important to make an effort to really “see'' other people? We will express our understanding through a written response that analyzes how the unlikely friendships Opal builds develop a central message, or theme, of the story.
