Welcome to JMBCS Occupational Therapy!
The role of an occupational therapist within the school system is to provide support to students to help them participate in their desired, daily school activities and help reduce the barriers that might be limiting their participation within the school enviornment. Some common targeted goal areas within the school setting can include:
- Handwriting skills
- Fine-motor skills- using school appropriate matierals, such as glue sticks, holding a pencil.
- Sensory processing skills- using strategies to help assist in receiving and modulating input as related to the senses.
- Visual-motor integration skills- using scissors, copying sentences from the board
- Visual perceptual skills- matching similiar objects, looking for items within a crowded environment, completing puzzles
- Self-care skills- opening up lunch boxes, tying shoes, putting on and taking off jackets
- Executive functioning skills- following multi-step instructions, organizing school materials
