Hello Room 206 Families!!

My name is Ms. Henry, and I am so excited to be your teacher this year! I have been a teacher for over 30 years. This is my 4th year at Roy N. Shelling.  I received my Bachelors in Elementary Education from Grambling State University and my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and Reading from Concordia University in Portland, Oregon.  I have six children, nine grandchildren, three grandpuppies and three grandcats.  In my spare time, I like to cook and bake for my family and friends. When I am not in the kitchen, I like reading and watching movies.  I studied French, but I do not speak it as well as I once did.  C'est dommage... I love coffee, dark chocolate, pretty coffee mugs, tote bags, ink pens, and sticky pads.  For fun, I love shooting pool, reading, cooking, and "hanging out" with family and friends.

I am available between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please feel free to reach out to me with any concerns you may have regarding your child.

Ms. Henry

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My teaching philosophy centers around creating a classroom where students work together, feel included, and are challenged in helping them succeed in school. In our class, students do read, analyze, engage in discussions, and write, which helps students share what they learn and meet classroom goals. It is my desire to make our classroom a positive place so that students can thrive, exhibite good behavior, and excel in their schoolwork. These are the principles I follow to create a supportive classroom that meets the diverse needs of all students and helps them grow academically.

The Importance of Literacy in Third Grade

Third grade is important because students begin reading to learn new things. It lays the foundation for future success. Good reading and writing skills help them do well in school and get good jobs when they grow up. These skills are also important for understanding hard subjects and getting ready for college and careers.

Key Skills Developed in Third-Grade ELA

  • Reading Comprehension: Students focus on finding the main idea, supporting details, and evidence within texts.
  • Vocabulary and Decoding: Students expand their word bank by learning new vocabulary, context clues, prefixes, and suffixes.
  • Writing Development: The focus shifts to more structured and complex writing, including informational and opinion writing with supporting evidence.
  • Critical Thinking: Engaging with texts and discussions helps students develop critical thinking skills and formulate their own opinions.
