- Orientation
Students will learn how to use the Media Center responsibily and respectfully. They will become familiar with the organization of the library, including fiction and nonfiction books, shelf markers, and check-out and check-in procedures. Students will also learn how to choose “just right” books based on their interests and reading needs.
Students will practice proper book care, including how to turn pages carefully, keep books away from food and drinks, store books safely at home, and return materials on time. They will also have opportunities to explore, listen to, and enjoy a variety of stories and books.
- Technology Orientation & Digital Tools
Students will develop an understanding of the technology and digital tools they use in their everyday lives. They will learn about the basic parts and functions of computers and other digital devices and explore appropriate ways to use technology for learning.
Students will also practice using digital devices responsibly and with care.
- Digital Citizenship
Students will learn the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful when using technology. They will explore age-appropriate digital citizenship skills, including how to make positive choices online, protect personal information, and use digital tools appropriately.
- Keyboarding & Word / Data Processing
Students will become familiar with basic keyboarding and computer skills. They will practice proper typing techniques and develop their ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and other digital devices.
Students will also use technology to create and share their ideas through documents, drawings, and other digital projects.
- Library Skills
Students will develop and strengthen important library and information literacy skills. They will explore different types of books and genres, learn about the parts of a book and the elements of a story, and distinguish between fiction and nonfiction.
Students will also learn how books are organized in the Media Center and practice using call numbers and the online catalog to locate materials. Throughout the year, students will discover new authors and illustrators and develop a greater appreciation for reading and literature.
- Coding
Students will explore the basics of computer coding and computational thinking through age-appropriate activities. They will learn how to follow and create sequences, recognize patterns, solve problems and use commands to complete tasks.
As their skills develop, students will experiment with drag-and-drop coding, block-based coding, and introductory programming concepts. They will also practice debugging, combining repeated commands, and creating simple original programs and algorithms.
- Research
Students will develop foundational research and note-taking skills. They will learn how to locate information using a variety of sources, including books, digital resources, and age-appropriate websites.
Students will explore the difference between primary and secondary sources and use information they gather to create projects and share their learning. They will also begin to understand the importance of copyright, giving credit to sources, and creating simple bibliographies.
