Here at TES we use Standard Based Grading and the following standards will be used to asses your child during 5th grade.

 

READING:

  • Fondational Skills:
    • Apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills when decoding and encoding words RF.5.3
    • Read prose and poetry with accurately and fluently to support comprehension RF.5.4
  • Literature and Informational Text:
    • Quote accurately from the text to support claims RL.5.1, RI.5.1
    • Summeraize and determine the theme or main idea using different strategies RL.5.2, RI.5.1
    • Compare and contrast individuals, events, and ideas across texts RL.5.3, RI.5.3
    • Determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases RL.5.4, RI.5.4
    • Compare, contrast, and explain the structure of texts RL.5.5, RI.5.5
    • Describe and analyze the point of view of a variety of texts RL.5.6., RI.5.6
    • Compare, contrast, integrate, and reflect on topics and information presented in multiple texts RL.5.9, RI.5.9

 

LANGUAGE ARTS:

  • Language and Writing:
    • Write opinion pieces using support from facts, strong structure, logically ordered reasons and informational type texts, and linking words W.5.1
    • Write using informational texts using strong structure, developing the topci using facts, details, and quotations, and using linking words and domain-specific words W.5.2
    • Write narratives using strong structure including BME, narrative techniques, concrete and sensory details, and linking words W.5.3
    • Develope and strengthen writing through revising, editing, or trying new approaches ina variety of tasks W.5.4
    • Conduct short research projects using several sources W.5.7, W.5.8
    • Using grammer effectively including prepositions, interjections, conjuctions, and verb tenses L.5.1
    • Use capitalization, punctuation, and spelling effectively L.5.2
    • Use Latin and greet roots to uncover word meanings L.5.4
    • Understand and interpret figurative language, word-relationships, word nuances including similies, metaphores, and idioms L.5.5
  • Speaking and Listening:
    • Engage effectivetly in a range of collaborative discusions with diverse partners on various topics and texts SL.5
    • Summarize and report on texts or infomation presented in different formats SL.5.2, SL.5.3, SL.5.4

 

MATHEMATICS:

  • Geometry:
    • Classify and describe the attributes of 2-dimensional shapes 5.G.A
    • Create and graph ordered pairs using X and Y coordinates in the first quadrant 5.G.B
  • Measurement & Data:
    • Convert customary and metric units and solve real world problems 5.MD.A
    • Represent and interpret data using line plots with fractions 5.MD.B
    • Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition 5.MD.C
  • Numbers & Operations in Base Ten:
    • Understand place value in terms of base 10 5.NBT.A
    • Read, write, compare, and round decimals 5.NBT.A
    • Perform multiplication and division with multi-digitl whole numbers 5.NBT.B
    • Perform addition and subtraction with decimals to hundredths 5.NBT.B
    • Perform multiplication and division with decimals to hundredths 5.NBT.B
  • Operations & Algebraic Thinking:
    • Write and evaluate expressions using the order of operations 5.OA.A
    • Create and identify relationships among data using ordered pairs 5.OA.B

 

 SCIENCE/STEAM:

  • Demonstrate understanding of disciplinary core ideas
  • Asks questions based on observations to find more information
  • Participates in class investigateions. Makes observations and collects data that can be used to answer a question to make comparisons
  • Records and shares scientific thoughts, observations, and ideas in the form of pictures, drawings, and/or writing
  • Design or build a device that solves a speific problem

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:

  • Demonstrates understanding of content, concepts, vocabulary, and processes
  • Interprets and uses visual materials (maps, charts, etc)
  • Communicates subject area knowledge through varied forms (writing, outline, techology, etc)

 

 

 

Each standard is scored using the a scale of 1 - 4.

  • 4 - Advanced
  • 3 - Meets Expectations of Standard
  • 2 - Partial Mastery of Standard. (Demonstrates partial understanding and more independent practice is needed.
  • 1 - Little or No Mastery of Standard even with assistance
