COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCATION

 

PROGRAM OVER-VIEW AND DESCRIPTION

 

 

OVER-VIEW The objective of this Comprehensive Health Education program is to provide each student, from time of entrance into the school system, with planned, systematic, and ongoing learning opportunities designed to maximize the prospect that each student will be able to make health-enhancing decisions that promote personal growth throughout life. Emphasis is placed on maintaining, reinforcing, and enhancing the health, health attitudes and practices, and health-related skills of all children and youth

 

The program is characterized by the following:

 

1. Instruction intended to motivate health maintenance and promote wellness with and emphasis on developing positive attitudes and behaviors.

 

2. Activities designed to develop decision-making competencies related to health and health behavior. The emphasis is on underlying attitudes, behaviors, and skills as they determine how facts are understood and used in an effort to instill a sense of responsibility in students. The application of problem-solving strategies in health situations is essential to establishing healthy lifestyles.

 

3. A planned, sequential, K-12 curriculum based upon students needs and current and emerging health concepts and societal issues. This program suggests age specific materials within a framework of systematically reinforced and expanded content.

 

4. Opportunities for all students to develop and demonstrate health-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices, recognizing individual differences.

 

5. Integration of the physical, mental, emotional, and social dimensions of health as the basis for study of community health, consumer health, environmental health, family life, growth and development, nutritional health, personal health, prevention and control of disease and disorders, safety and accident prevention, and substance use and abuse.

Program Purpose:

 

                  The purpose of this program is to cooperatively develop and implement a comprehensive, sequential, 12 Health curriculum for Delsea Regional High School District and its elementary sending districts. The program incorporates components of the current state-endorsed core content standards for Comprehensive Health Education and related instructional methods.
