Dear Scholars,

Welcome to our 10th grade ELA class. Your class is on the first floor and the room number is 118.  You have three minutes to get to class on time.  Make sure you are making an effort to arrive to class on time.  There is a penalty for being late to class.  I don't want to see anyone repeat this class simply because you lost credit for the course.

I look forward to  leading you toward a sucessful academic school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to me about things.  The best time to meet with me is 8 am.  That is my free time to conference with students about grades, missing work, or even how to bring your grade up further.  Please do not come to me when I am teaching a class.  I will gladly make an appointment with you to speak about how to improve and what assignments you might still owe me.

Please note, if you are focusing on your cell phone or listening to music, you are doing the wrong thing.  Irvington high school does not condone conversing on the phone while in class, texting anyone, or  watching movies in class,.  The same applies to headphones, beats, or earbuds,  They must be put away in your bookbag.  I  want each one of you to learn as much as you possibly can in order for you to be prepared for the world.  You cannot focus on learning new concepts , if you are distracted. You cannot perfect your skills,if you are breaking the rules.   Please for your sake , keep the phones out of sight and off.  Put your earbuds in your backpack, and no one is to wear headphones in class to listen to music.

Please come to class with your Chromebook already charged.  If you need to charge your Chromebook, you should have your charger with you.  I highly recommend writing your name on a piece of paper and taping it onto your charger.  This way there will be no confustion about

whose charger it is.No one is allowed to charge their cellular phones in the class.

HomeworK:

Please remember to work on your IXL  for a minimum of 20- 25 minutes three times a week at home.  This is your weekly homework assignment.  I will be checking the IXL data on a biweekly basis.  IXl scores will be printed out each month and placed in your  class folder.  The only way anyone will fail this class is if you make a decision not to participate in your education.

This week students are busy writing an essay that contains 300 to 500 words in it. This is a timed writing piece.  You must write the first draft on lined paper which I will provide.  You vewill have 60 minutes to complete the first draft.  After I have looked over your essay, you will work on editing and revising your paper.  I will return it to you and you will be required to typ eit up in a Google Document and then submit in Google Classroom.  The topic is: What person has made a major impact on your educational years while you have attended school?

GRADING: I will take three days to grade your work and return it to you.  Once you receive your work back, I will have made recommendations for you to improve your work.  Please follow through with the recommendations and make the changes.  It is not a quesiton it is a necessary component for you to be able to boost up your grade.   When you turn in your work whether it be homework or classwork, please put the proper heading on your work.

This quarter we have already read 23 chapters of "The House on Mango Street" wirtiiten by the author, Sandra Cisneros.  No student is to take a book home with them.  There is only one class set.  However, I have uploaded the audio version of the book and the written text as well. Please keep up with your readings.  Along with the readings, you will be writing summaries, and answering text dependent qadestions, as well as answering Higher Order Thinking Questions. In class, we will discuss the various themes within the book, and the roles that women and men have in life.  You will make connections from the text to your own experiences, the text to world events, and text to text.  We will discuss poverty, drugs, acceptable and unacceptable ways to move up in the world.  We will delve into how immigrants face different stereotypical barriers, and compare those to people  of colors, races, or ethnic groups.

Reading Homework: Read two chapters every two days at home. Take notes on what you read, including the title of each chapter and the page numbers you read.   This is in addition to the reading,  we do in the clasroom. So out of seven days in a week, you should be reading 6 chapters weekly.

UPCOMING EXAMS: YOU WILL START AND FINISH THE CYCLE TWO EXAMS NEXT WEEK.

UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES: THE QUARTER 2 SEMESTER WILL END ON JANUARY 18, 2025.
