Claim | The claim demonstrates full understanding of the science topics under study. | The claim demonstrates partial understanding of the science topics under study. | The claim is inaccurate or implausible, given student understandings. | No claim is made. |
Evidence | All evidence used to support the claim is appropriate and interpreted correctly. | Most evidence used to support the claim is appropriate and interpreted correctly. May include some inappropriate or incorrect evidence. | Evidence used is not appropriate (not related to the claim) and/or not interpreted correctly. | No evidence is provided. |
Reasoning | The reasoning references the claim and evidence. It uses scientific principles when possible or a logical connection to the evidence to explain why the data counts as evidence to support the claim. | Provides reasoning that is an evident attempt to link the reasoning to a scientific principle or to construct a logical connection between the claim and evidence. However, the principle or logical connection does not completely support the claim and/or does not use the evidence effectively. | The reasoning restates the evidence used with little or no attempt to explain why the data counts as evidence. No reasoning is given. | No reasoning is given. |
Clarity | The explanation is constructed in a concise way so that the reader can easily understand the explanation. | The explanation is a complete paragraph but is difficult to follow. | The explanation paragraph is written as three unique points rather than a coherent paragraph. | No explanation is written. |
