Honors Chemistry Class Info./Syllabus

 

GENERAL INFORMATION: This class is an introduction to chemistry including properties of matter, structure of atoms, reactions and calculationsinvolving chemical reactions. Special topics will include States of matter, Acids & Bases, Solution Chemistry, Gas laws and Thermochemistry. The scientific method and problem techniques will be emphasized throughout the year.

 

Reminders:

  • HW needs to be completed every night.
  • Bring a scientific calculator to class everyday.

  •  Lab assignments are due the following lab day (one week from the completion of the lab).

  • Missed Lab experiments must be made up within 2 weeks or a grade of zero will be automatically recorded for that assignment.

  • Missed homeworks and tests (due to absence) must be made up within 2 days of the absence.

  • Absence on the day before a test does not excuse a student from taking the test on the scheduled test day.  If the student is absent on the day of the test, they should expect to make the test up the day they return to school.

Assessments

  • Tests are given at the end of each unit and are usually between 70 and 100 points.  They are announced in advance and are prepared for with a unit review sheet and sometimes a review game.  

  • Projects are an option for an end of unit assessment. 

 

Lab 

   Experiments are performed weekly with lab partners. Students will partner up and work together to reach the objectives of the experiment in the time allotted.  Lab assignments are due the following lab day (one week from the completion of the lab). While you collect the data in class with a partner; the post lab analysis questions are to be done individually. The Academic Integrity Policy will be enforced. Post Lab Analysis assignments emphasize organization and comprehension of material. 

 

Homework

  This category includes material given to you for ‘at home work’ and ‘in class work’.  Assignments are given on a daily basis and are meant to teach and review the lesson material. Students are expected to do between 20-30 minutes of homework per day. This includes lesson reading, watching videos, interactive powerpoint, math problems, open-ended questions and lab simulations.
