Welcome to Mrs. Rushing's Homepage!!

Wow! August is here already! Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer.

One of my many goals, as a teacher, is to maintain a positive learning environment for ALL students. Here, in Kindergarten, we take great pride in building great teacher-parent relationships, as well as, teacher-student relationships; so please don’t hesitate to discuss any concerns or issues, regarding your child, with me.

“Kinder” is a BIG year and the students will learn so much in just a short period of time; so your help will be necessary! Please practice handwriting skills, (for example, writing name neatly, writing upper- and lowercase letters, numbers 1-20), and learning letter sounds and recognizing upper- and lowercase letters. These are all skills that students MUST master before leaving Kindergarten.

Again, I am very excited to have your child in my classroom this school year and I look forward to helping each one learn and grow!

Let’s have an AWESOME year!!

Parents,

We encourage you to read at least one book per day to your child. Students are also encouraged to read books independently on their grade level; you'll be surprised at what they've learned so far!

The following books are grade level appropriate for Kindergarten:

1. "Biscuit Goes to School" by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

2. "May I Please Have a Cookie?" by Jennifer Morris

3."Pete the Cat: Pete at the Beach" by James Dean

4. "I Like Bugs" by Margaret Wise Brown

5. "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss

6. "Go, Dog, Go!" by P.D. Eastman

 7. “Ten Black Dots” by Donald Crews

8. “I’m a Caterpillar” by Jean Marzollo

9. “A Catfish Tale” by Whitney Stewart

10. “Goodnight NOLA” by C. Landry

In addition, www.abcmouse.com is a great program for students to work on skills in the form of games and other activities. This program usually runs a 30-day free trial for first time users. Students can also make their own letters and numbers flashcards using index cards. This is a great activity your child can do alone or with a sibling!
