Read with Your Student

  • Research shows this is the best way to improve reading skills.  If your child isn't reading yet then you read to them. You can also look for audio recording of childrens books on YouTube. Let them pick out books they like.  Even if they pick the same books over and over again, it is still helping them build confidence and fluency.
  • Once you read a book, ask your student basic questions about the book. Here are a few questiosn you could ask:
    1. What was the book about?
    2. What did you like about it?
    3. What didn't you like about it?
    4. What did you learn from the book?
    5. What questions do you have about what you read?
    6. What didn't you understand about what you read?
    7. What do you wnat to learn more about after reading the book?
    8. How does this book connect ot other books you've read?
  • Students can take AR tests at home on Renaissance.

Accelerated Reader (AR):

Students are given an AR goal each nine weeks. At the end of the nine weeks, students wil recieve a 50 point grade for their accuracy and their goal. I will check in with students each week to make sure they are making progress towards the goal. Please help encourage them to read by asking them about what they have read using the questions above.
