VB-MAPP is a milestone skill assessment for children and adults with a range of abilities. The Milestone assessment assess 170 milestones across 3 levels of typical development (0-18 months; 18-30 months and 30-48 months).  The milestones are quantifiable and measurable and are used as a baseline for learning tasks.  The milestones cover 16 domains: mand, tact, interverbal, listener, visual perceptual, play, social, and early academics.

The Barrier Assessment of the VB-MAPP assesses 24 language and learning barriers that may prevent a child from making progress. It can be used to help establish intervention priorities.

The Transition Assessment helps assist the IEP team in making transition and educational placement decisions.

Below are some of the most common terms that will appear in communication logs or IEP's:

Mand: A request . Can be verbal or non-verbal, used to gain access to an item or activity. Controlled by a motivator. EX: Child asks " I want juice" ;  child says "juice" ; child uses device to press "juice"

Tact: A label .  Can be prompted by "What's this" EX: Child is shown a picture of juice and prompted "This is .." Child responds "Juice."

Listener Responding: Requires the listener to respond to another's verbal behavior. EX: Teacher asks: "Point to   juice" Child responds by pointing to a picture of a juice in an array of picture cards

Visual Perceptual/ Matching to Sample: Matching 2D and 3D items. A stimulus is presented and taught to match secondary stimulus. EX: When looking at an array of 5 pictures student is given a picture of juice and matched it to a similar picture of juice in the array.
