The purpose of this course is to allow students to become proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking, and learn to develop strong literacy skills to compete in the global economy once they graduate high school.  This course uses a developmental as well as an integrated approach to acquiring skills by reading a variety of genres. 

 

Each student will:

   - Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of English Language Arts and Literature. 

   - Use point of view, characterization, style, irony, and other related literary devices and terms when reading literature and discussing it in large groups and small groups.

   - Write narrative, persuasive, argumentative documents in preparation for college and/ or a career.  

 

This course will focus on the following topics:

   - Learning academic vocabulary for writing and speaking

   - Editing and revision of written works

   - Reading comprehension of various genres at both inferential and literal levels

   - Grammar, sentence structure, and usage

  

Materials needed for success in this class include:

   - 1 "Do Now" Binder Notebook and Folder

   - 1 "Notetaking" Composition Notebook

   - 2 Black or Blue Pens

   - 2 Pencils w/ erasers

   - 1 Highlighter

   - Sticky notes for annotating 

 

Texts used for this class include:

    - Collections

    - Close Reader Workbooks
