Welcome to first grade, I'm looking forward to a great year!

Hello and welcome back to school! I am so excited to get to know you and your child. This year, I will be teaching your child Math, Social Living/Science, and Art/PE/Music. During the day your child will be spending their time between our two classrooms. All parties, field trips, “extra activities” (as they are allowed) will be taking place with your child’s homeroom teacher. Here are some important things for you to know to start the year.

Homework: A weekly newsletter will be sent home on Monday’s. Attached to this newsletter will be worksheets related to the skills we are covering in class. This work is not to be completed in one night, homework is not due until Friday’s. Family time is important and we realize with families of our own how busy life can be, so this flexibility allows for time for you to help your child complete his/her packet. In addition to this “packet”, your child will have a “Daily Reading Log.” Mrs. Jessica will be sending home more information about this at a later date.

Green Folders: Your child will receive a green Parent/Teacher Communication folder. This folder will go home daily. Inside of this folder you will find a daily behavior chart, important notes from the teacher/teachers, and other school wide notes. This includes field trip information, information about parties (as allowed), as well as notes from the school. This folder should be checked and signed each day. If you have a note for me, place it inside the folder as we will check them first thing in the morning.

Money: Please put all money used for recess/lunchroom in a labeled envelope or plastic bag. Please label with you child’s name, their homeroom teacher, and what the money is for.

Behavior :  Our school follows a School Wide Positive Behavior Plan. Our classroom/school rules follow this plan. Please review school rules with your child. At the bottom of your child’s behavior calendar there is a key for each infraction. These will be written inside the box. If an incident requires further explanation, a note will be attached.

Communication:  Aside from the green communication folders, you will be given a code for the Remind! App to join to receive updates/pictures of your child in class. Many of these updates will be sent during planning periods or after school. However, communication needs to take place in the form of a handwritten note, a scheduled conference, or using our school email provided through Livingston Parish School Board. Grocery store conversations, facebook messages, text messages, personal phone calls or any other form of communication cannot be allowed as it is not school board approved and is not confidential. This policy protects the rights of your child and the rights of other children as all information regarding your child’s education is confidential.

Covid-19: As you are aware many precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of your child. Any information we receive, you will receive. Things change and this is unknown territory we are all entering. Please rest assured we will get through this together and have the safety of your child in our best interest. Your child’s temperature will be checked daily upon departing from the bus or your vehicle. If your child has a fever upon arrival to school, you will be contacted to come and get your child. Until your arrival your child will be kept isolated from other children. Please discuss with your child the importance of keeping our hands/feet to ourselves and instill good handwashing practices as we will be handwashing as often as possible throughout the day. Breakfast will be a grab and go style this year, children will grab their breakfast in a bag and eat in our classrooms. This is new this year. Students will also be allowed to have water bottles as water fountains will be unable to be used.

For the first couple weeks, we will be reviewing Kindergarten skills, learning classroom routines/procedures and getting to know one another.
