Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year!  My name is Kay Benjamin, and I will be your child's English Language Arts/Reading teacher at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School. I am excited to begin a year of meaningful learning under Monroe City Schools’ banner of “Lights, Camera, Achieve.” I look forward to meeting and working with all of my students and their parents. The lesson content will be challenging; however, I will use various methods to make the classes more understandable and enjoyable. I hope to make this year an educational and fun-filled year for the students.

Please log in to Parent Command to view your student’s grades throughout the year. The steps are as listed:

  1. Go to mcschools.net

  2. Go to “Log me into,” then scroll down and click on “Student Progress Center.”

  3. If you have already used this for your child, login.

  4. If you have not, click Register New User.

  5. The PSN number is the last 5 digits of the student’s social security number.

  6. Click Continue.

The ELA 8th Grade curriculum consists of four units:

  • Freak the Mighty

  • Diary of a Young Girl

  • Persuasion (Animal Farm)

  • Application

At the start of each unit, students will receive a Student Materials workbook that includes activities for the unit. Students are responsible for keeping up with these books and keeping track of their assignments.

In addition to the learning units, we will study grammar and vocabulary. Students will complete activities in their Grammar and Word Study Practice workbooks as well as their WordGen Weekly workbooks. Students will also be required to complete at least 25 Lexia units each week.

We have many expectations for our students at MLK. One of the most important expectations here is accountability. Your student is responsible for completing and turning in each assignment. It is essential that you follow up at home with assignments, projects, correspondences, and reinforcing positive behavior. Students should also come to class with a positive attitude, ready to learn. Class disruptions will not be tolerated.

Please join me on Remind using the information that is included on the following page. Also, please sign and return the acknowledgement page. If questions or concerns should arise, please feel free to email or call anytime.  I look forward to seeing you at Open House!
