Classroom Rules, Expectations, & Procedures
1. INTRODUCTION
Rules and procedures are fundamental in life. We follow rules and procedures in our daily lives. There are also rules and procedures in the classroom. These rules and procedures ensure a positive atmosphere in the classroom. They contribute to a controlled learning environment for everyone.
2. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
WSJHS students will…
-
Demonstrate an active involvement in their learning.
-
Demonstrate logical thinking and problem solving ability.
-
Effectively communicate through writing, listening, speaking, and reading across all content areas.
-
Demonstrate the ability to locate, organize, evaluate, and utilize different sources of information and/or data.
-
Be responsible and honest.
-
Identify goals and set priorities to prepare for life and career decision making.
- Respect the teacher and classmates (You respect the teacher when you do what she says, don’t talk back, do not touch her property without permission, and follow all classroom rules and procedures. You respect your classmates when you follow classroom rules and procedures)
- Follow directions (This means that you do whatever the teacher tells you to do without complaining or arguing about it. Example: go back to seat, copy from board, stop talking, etc.)
- Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself (This means you do not throw things, kick things, push people, hit people, etc.)
- No swearing, teasing, or name calling (You do not use obscene or vulgar language in the classroom for any reason. You do not make fun of or tease another classmate).
- Be in the classroom when the bell rings (This means I want you in your seat as soon as you come into my classroom and I want you to be on time.)
- Clean up after yourself. Please discard any trash in the trashcan on your way out of the class.
- SEVERE: No fighting, threats, or verbal abuse (It is extremely inappropriate for you to fight with another classmate, threaten anyone, or verbally abuse by insulting.) This will result in an immediate referral to administration!
- Cell Phones/Devices are to ONLY be out/visible/in use when being utilized for class activities related to the lesson. Infractions on this policy will result in you not being able to have your phone in the classroom. You also will not receive the points allocated for participation in those activities.
3. ENTERING THE CLASSROOM
- You are not to stand or wait around in the hallway.
- Enter the classroom quietly.
- Take your seat.
- Copy the Bell Work assignment from the board in your notebook.
- Work quietly and by yourself.
- Wait for further instructions from the teacher.
4. IF YOU ARE LATE
You are late to class if you are not inside the classroom when the bell rings
(This includes if the door is still open). If you are late to class, you must:
- Proceed to the office for a tardy slip.
- Return to class and hand the slip to the teacher.
- Take your assigned seat.
- Join the activity in progress. If you don’t know what the class is doing raise your hand (Do not interrupt the other students.)
- Consequences for Tardiness….See School/District Policy.
5. IF YOU ARE ABSENT
It is your responsibility to make-up any assignments or tests in a timely manner when you return from an absence. Follow this procedure:
- Join the activity in progress. If you don’t know what to do, raise your hand and wait until I reach you.
- During the last 5 minutes of class copy the missing activities. You have the same amount of "excused" days you “missed” to “make up” assignments.
- If you need to make-up a test you must make arrangements with the teacher during the last 5 minutes of class.
- Tests can only be made up before school, during lunch, or only if previous arrangements have been made.
- Assignments: If you have access to the Internet at home you may e-mail me at: [email protected] and ask for missing work. You can also e-mail work, if possible. Class work and homework will be posted on my website: http://stjohn.oncoursesystems.com/websites/13702595
FYI….All missed Bell Work, Do Now's, and Exit Ticket work cannot be made up. You will receive an “E”(Exempt) for these items and it will not count against your grade.
6. TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS
The teacher will sometimes collect homework, group-work or individual work. You will turn these in only when the teacher asks for them. Make sure the assignment has your full name, block number, and date. This should be on the top margin of your paper.
7. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS
Extra credit assignments will occasionally be given. Anyone may turn in extra credit.
8. GETTING YOUR ATTENTION
There may be times when I may need to get everyone’s undivided attention so that I may give directions, explanations, answer group questions, etc. or if the noise level gets too loud. When I need everyone to stop talking and pay attention to me:
I will say “Class, your attention please” and raise my hand.
When you see me raise my hand you must:
- Stop talking and look at me.
- Wait for me to speak.
This procedure should take us no more than 5 seconds.
9. WHEN WE HAVE A VISITOR
A. When we have someone come into our classroom who is not part of our class (teacher, administrator, student, parent) you are expected to follow the same classroom rules and procedures. You are expected to be polite to the visitor. Do not talk to the visitor unless he/she is talking to you directly. Continue working on your assignment as usual.
B. If the visitor needs to speak to me privately, I expect you to remain in your seat without talking until I finish speaking with the visitor.
10. WHEN YOU FINISH EARLY
If you finish all of your assigned work/quiz/test early you may:
- Review class notes
- Study
- Remain quiet and not disturb any fellow classmates.
11. RESTROOM POLICY
In order to control the amount of traffic leaving the classroom, you may go to the restroom only if:
- There is a medically supported/documented reason.
- You have finished all of your assigned work.
- The class is working on Individual Seatwork (no passes during Teacher or Guest Lecture).
- You have not abused this privilege in the past.
- If permission is given to go to the restroom you must obtain a hall pass located by the door.
12. CONSEQUENCES
Everything we do in life has consequences. Consequences are the things that happen to you when you choose not to obey a rule. This is what will happen if you choose to violate one of the classroom rules:
- 1st time: Verbal Warning
- 2nd time: Call Home/Participation Points Deduction
- 3rd time: Referred to Administration/Participation Points Deduction
FYI…Cheating is NEVER acceptable and will result in an automatic conference with Teacher/Parent/Administration and any further reprimands per the student handbook/District Policy.
13. REWARDS
I will recognize students who choose responsible behavior if they have no marks next to their name for two consecutive weeks.
Possible rewards are:
- 5 bonus points on test or quiz
- Excused from one individual assignment
(NOT including any REQUIRED tests/labs/project(s))
