_Life Threatening Allergy - Parent Letter 2024 .pdf
August 2024
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of Students in Mrs. Jones Class,
We have some children in the Bridgewater Raritan Regional School District who have life threatening allergies to certain foods and materials, including (but not limited to) nuts, peanuts, peanut based products, seeds, shellfish, and dairy products. We have learned through consultation with our pediatric allergists, as well as our own research, that the most severe reactions range from hives and itching, to difficulty breathing and possible cardiac arrest. The seriousness ofthe allergy is compounded by the fact that the food does not always have to be ingested to cause a reaction - simply touching someone or something that has had contact with the product can result in severe consequences. Even trace amounts ofresidue of material may induce a reaction. This letter is to inform you that there may be a student in your child’s class who has a SEVERE FOOD and MATERIAL ALLERGY.
These include dairy, nuts and latex. Due to the possibility of an allergic reaction, it is imperative that this student must avoid these foods and materials completely. Ifthe student comes in contact with latex or offending foods, the student may suffer a life threatening reaction.
For the entire school year, we are requesting that all snacks brought to the school remain in your child’s backpack and not be taken out until the appropriate time under the supervision of the teacher.
Below is a list of approved non-dairy foodsfor your consideration. It is imperative that you closely read food labels prior to sending snacks with your child each day. This list will also be posted in the teacher’s Google Classroom for your review and referencing.

One other important item to acknowledge is hand washing. By frequently washing your hands, you wash away germs that you have picked up from other people and from contaminated surfaces. When dealing with allergies, hand washing with soap and water is an essential practice. We ask that you have your child wash their hands prior to coming to schoolfrom home to help prevent any reactions.
Please feel free to reach out directly to Mrs. Gretchen English, Crim School Nurse, with any questions. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Kelliann TenKate
