Course Syllabus 2021-2022

 

Course: 6th 7th, and 8th Grade Read 180

 

Course Description:

READ 180 Universal is an innovative blended learning solution by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, built to ensure all readers are on a track to college, career, and beyond. It is a research-based program with proven results in raising student reading achievement. READ 180 uses cutting-edge technology to deliver individualized reading instruction for each student, provide valuable practice with essential reading skills and strategies, and motivate students to become confident and lifelong readers.

In our READ 180 class, your child and I will work together to:

 • Bring his or her reading proficiency up to grade level 

• Apply reading and writing strategies to other subjects such as social studies, science, and math 

• Develop multi-paragraph writing skills 

• Build knowledge and develop essential literacy skills for college and career readiness 

• Develop a deep level of confidence in themselves and their reading abilities 

 

Offer encouragement and provide support at home by visiting the library, setting aside reading time, and discussing the books your child reads.

 

Daily Class Routine:

R180 is based on a 90 minute model:  

Whole group instruction using the ReaL book – 20 minutes

Students then complete three 20 minute rotations:

  1. Read 180 computer software – students independently complete activities on the computer

  2. Independent reading station – reading log is required

  3. Guided literacy groups with the teacher using the Real book

 

Calculation of Grade:  

LEVEL 1 TASKS – 10%:  Supported/guided assignments.  Practice toward mastery of content.  Assignments types included in this category are Classwork and Homework. The average score of all assignments in this category is 10% of the marking period grade.

LEVEL 2 TASKS – 30%:   Demonstrations of mastery over limited amounts of content, encompassing learning over a class or few classes or limited numbers of standards skills.  Assignment types included in this category are Quizzes, Projects, and Labs.  The average score of all assignments in this category is 30% of the marking period grade.

LEVEL 3 TASKS – 60%:   Tasks that require major applications of mastery and applications of content, encompassing learning over time or of multiple standards/skills.  Assignment types included in this category are Tests, Projects, Labs and Performance.  The average score of all assignments in this category is 60% of the marking period grade.TestsTS
