Course Description:

 

This course is designed to educate students in the key areas of health and fitness. The main areas of focus include muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, power, flexibility and balance. Students will benefit from comprehensive weight training and cardiorespiratory endurance activities. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of weight training, strength training, aerobic training, and overall fitness training and conditioning. This course includes both lecture and activity sessions. Students will be empowered to make wise choices, meet challenges, and develop positive behaviors in fitness, wellness, and movement activity for a lifetime. Fitness Activities covered: Circuit training, Power walking, Weight Training, Aerobic training, and Strength training.

 

New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards:

 

2.1 –Wellness: All students will acquire health promotion concepts and skills to support a healthy, active lifestyle.

 

2.2 –Integrated Skills: All students will develop and use personal and interpersonal skills to support a healthy, active lifestyle.

 

2.3 - Drugs and Medicines: All students will acquire knowledge about alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and medicines and apply these concepts to support a healthy, active lifestyle.

 

2.5 –Motor Skills: All students will achieve optimal wellness by learning and applying movement concepts and skills.

 

2.6 – Fitness: All students will achieve optimal wellness learning and applying fitness concepts and skills.

 

Learning Targets:

 

Students will…

 

  • Demonstrate and apply movement skills specific to each muscle for optimum strength/output gain.

  • Assess and apply a variety of exercises to a specific muscle group to achieve strength/output gain.

  • Analyze the role of a specific muscle group, and recommend strategies/movements that will enhance their performance.

  • Apply basic nutritional and fitness concepts to lifestyle behaviors.

  • Create strategies to develop and maintain fitness in a variety of activities.

  • Develop an understanding of how nutrition plays a role in physical development.

 

Grading System and Assessment of Student Performance:

 

Students will receive numerical grades.  Grades will be assessed by the following guidelines:

 

50% - Test / Project / Performance/Labs 

 

35% -  Quizzes /Labs/Independent Practice/Learning Engagement

 

15% - Guided Practice/ Homework

 

Expectations and Classroom Rules:

 

  • NO CELL PHONES/ EAR BUDS/HEADPHONES  IN CLASS- Phones must be put away in your yonder pouch before you enter the classroom. If a phone is taken out during class it will be reported to the office and the student will be sent to the office and written up accordingly.

  • All students need a pencil/pen, folder and notebook.

  • IPads must be charged and ready to use in class. 

  • Students will follow classroom rules.

  • Raise your hand when you have a question, please do not interrupt when someone else is speaking.

  • Be RESPECTFUL of classmates, classroom, and class materials.

  • Bathroom passes will be given out during homeroom and for emergencies only during class time.

  • Students MUST fill out a SMART PASS to leave the classroom no paper passes are given.

  • Workout clothes are required when the class is in the Gym and we follow PE rules

 

Expectations and Classroom Rules:

 


•  Sneakers are required for participation in class no sneakers =  no participation = a ZERO for the day  

• All students’ assigned medical excuses from physical education will be assigned to the library and given assignments to be completed and  will be graded.
• No jewelry is permitted to be worn in physical education class. Jewelry becomes a safety hazard when students are involved in activity.
• All students are to follow established classroom rules and participate in class activities to the best of their ability.

1. No gum, food, or drink permitted in gymnasium.
2. Students will exit locker rooms when dismissed by the teacher.
3. Students unprepared for class are not permitted to participate in activity.
