Various handouts will be given out in class on Grammar, vocabulary, new expressions etc. So you need to have enough room to save all of those. Also loose leaf paper will be required  to jot down any new info you learn. Plan accordingly.

-A 3 ring binder for your unit packets, paper, writing utensils or if you want labeled pocket folders for each thematic unit.

  • Grading Policy (tentative- subject to change)

Please keep in mind that active participation on ALL levels (speaking/reading/writing/listening) is key to earning a good grade. The district’s uniform world language grading policy will be followed. For numerical and letter grades please consult the student handbook. For this class our grade will be distributed as follows:

-Quizzes/Formative assessments 30%

Quizzes may or may not be announced. They will assess vocabulary and grammar.

-Daily Practice -Homework/Classwork/Participation 20%-

Homework may be given on a regular basis and checked (will be posted on google classroom as needed)

Variety of rubrics will be used to assess participation.

(Are you attentive in class? Are you prepared for class? How much do you actively participate and how much French do you use in class?)

-Tests/Projects/Integrated performance assessments 50%

Projects or tests are intended to build proficiency in the language and are a mixture of interpretive (interpreting a movie/text/brochure etc), Interpersonal (conversations, language lab recordings, skits), Presentational (presentations, 2 minute recordings on various topics such as vacation, family, hobbies etc) , IPA type assessments.

  • EXTRA CREDIT

Students are urged to do their best in the class throughout the year and not rely on extra credit to bring up their grade. However if the need arises, I will be able to offer you some extra credit assignments (no more than 2 per marking period)

HW passes are usually given out as prizes with a +2 or +3 on a quiz/project and can be used towards extra credit.

Extra credit for FOOD can only be given out to students if they make an authentic French dish and bring it to class for a cultural celebration.

Extra credit expires at the end of the marking period. You cannot use MP 1 extra credit for MP2

  • Extra help

Will be during lunch, my professional duty period 8 or after school (depending on my availability-email me to confirm)

Please don’t wait till the last minute to review important material with me for quizzes and tests.

  Academic Integrity

During the year you will be given assignments and projects that will provide you opportunities to practice what you are learning

in terms of language and content. With that in mind, your words/expressions are what I want you to convey in everything you submit unless otherwise instructed to work collaboratively. Copying from the Internet/language translator, copying homework assignments or answers on a quiz/test from another student are forms of cheating/plagiarism and will result in an automatic zero. The school's Academic Intergiry Policy will be enforced and additional consequences applied.

C] Daily classroom procedures

  • Entering the class

Please enter the class quietly. Greet the teacher in French (Bonjour). Go to your assigned seat and start working immediately.

  • Do now Activity

Do now will be posted on the overhead. You should begin work as soon as you enter the class. Do not wait for me to prompt you. You get points for doing DO NOW’s and are counted towards your participation grade.

  • Leaving the class

Say “AU REVOIR, A DEMAIN”. Straighten your desks, clean up your area, and then leave the class. ABSOLUTELY NO LINING UP AT THE DOOR WITH YOUR CELL PHONE. THAT WILL RESULT IN A DETENTION AND/OR REDUCTION IN YOUR PARTICIPATION GRADE. EVEN IF WE ARE DONE EARLY, YOU NEED TO BE SEATED AND CHAT WITH YOUR PARTNER IN FRENCH (extra participation points).

  • To get your attention

When I start counting down from 10 prepare yourself to stop whatever you are doing, face me. By the count of 1 everybody should be seated and quiet.

  • Permission in French:

Access to certain things such as the pencil sharpener, bathroom, dictionary etc is only possible with the use of passwords. You get bonus points for using French.

Learning a language is like learning how to play a sport or a musical instrument.

The rules of the game or the musical notes may be easy to comprehend, but considerable practice is required for mastery. In order to be successful in class, active participation and consistent study at home is imperative. The French program is structured thematically and does not always follow a textbook sequence. Therefore, class attendance; participation and responsible note taking are essential. Enjoy your year!
