ORGANIZATIONS
- I also formerly represented Public School #1 & Public School #4, where I taught for 7 years, in a health and fitness comittee sponsored by the YMCA called 'Alliance for a Healthier Generation'
- Several staff members from those schools, including the administration, were members of my team to help execute our chief concerns and
initiatives in being affiliated with this organization
- The aim in this organization was to simply reinforce good nutrition and physical activity in the classrooms to alter our students' daily lives
in a positive direction.
- Behavior change is influenced or determined by the environment- because environments value and reward certain behaviors.
- To address the obesity problem and maintain our students' health, we need to change the environment. Therefore, it is OUR job and
responsibility to change and create such an environment that teaches, reinforces and rewards physical activity and healthy eating habits
on a daily basis.
- My role in executing this mission was to ensure that this happened and good nutrition and physical activity was practiced on a daily basis- aside from phys. ed class and recess, ALL teachers were encouraged to help accomplish this by conducting
QUICK and INSTANT activities in the classroom on occasion. It could be done and used either: as a REWARD after doing some class work to simply break up the day and help re-focus students OR just before a quiz or test to help calm the students nerves- teachers may choose to:
- DO SOME QUICK EXERCISES FOR 2 MINUTES (teacher chooses 6 different stretches or exercises to have students do for 30 seconds each and move on to the next exerise)
- students may stay right at their desks and do various stretches for their upper and lower body OR exerises such as jumping
jacks, mountain climbers, push-ups, sit-ups, burpees, planks, supermans, and much more....
Teachers may also choose to play a quick game for a few minutes with the students a couple of times throughout the day- The classroom teacher may choose but is not limited to:
'silent ball' (a fun throwing and catching game- students form a big circle around the classroom- the may throw a yarn or soft-material ball to any student standing in the circle- if a student drops the ball OR makes a bad throw OR is talking- they are OUT and have to sit at their desk until the game is over- the last student standing is the winner)
'Rock, Paper, Scissors' (a fun game that allows students to travel from desk to desk for a few minutes and play the rock, paper, scissor game against each other)
'7-UP' (a fun and engaging game where 7 students @ a time get to come up in front of the classroom, and the rest of the students at their desks have to GUESS which of those 7 put their thumbs down when their heads were down and eyes were closed.
