Syllabus for English 9/10 and Honors
With Mr. Jackson
2016-2017 School Year
This course is a developmental and integrated approach to skill acquisition for College and Career Readiness through: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and use of Language.
Students will:
- Develop and master the ability to cite textual evidence to support their opinions and apply comprehension ability.
- Demonstrate concise utilization of synthesis, analysis, and evaluation techniques through elements of discourse (e.g. purpose, speaker, audience, form) when completing narrative, expository, persuasive, or descriptive writing assignments.
- Use point of view, characterization, style (e.g. use of irony), and related elements for specific rhetorical and aesthetic purposes.
- Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained, persuasive, and sophisticated way, and support them with precise and relevant examples.
Course Focus:
- Writing Development utilizing a wide array of Poetry/Prose building a Writing Portfolio
- Analyzing a multitude of fictional and informational text
- Technical editing and revision skills
- Vocabulary Development using Contextual Evidence
- Reading Comprehension at Literal and Inferential Levels
Materials:
- HMH Collections 9 (w/ online resource) Textbook 2014 Edition
- HMH Close Reader Workbook 2014 Edition
- HMH Performance Assessment Workbook 2014 Edition
- Students are required to come to every single class with a notebook, loose-lead paper for assignments, and at least three (3) pens or pencils to be considered "prepared." Please ensure that your child is coming to class with all necessary materials.
