Course Description and Objectives: Students will actively read a range of materials, fiction and nonfiction novels along with addtional texts - journal articles, periodicals, video clips, movie excerpts, etc. to compare, contrast, trace, and analyze the development of multiple central ideas and claims. Students will express their comprehension of the texts through written response using standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, and classroom discussion sessions in preparation for assessments.
Course Grading:
Grading Periods: At the end of each grading period every student will receive a minimum of nine grades (five formative assessments, 30% total) and four summative assessments, 70% total). These grades will be broken down as follows:
1.) Daily Assignments (30%)- this grade will be based on the work I RECEIVE (paper or electronic) for class activities such as annotated reading assignments, graphic organizers, worksheets, and ESPECIALLY ***Exit Tickets***
2.) Summative Assessment (70%): (3 Options)
Cold-Read Test (Several M/C questions and one Critical Question calling for multi-paragraph response)
Extended Response Test (question(s) calling for a multi-paragraph written response)
Imagine Learning (Learnzillion) Section Test (multiple choice/short Answer questions)
Progress Reports are issued every two weeks. Report cards are issued after the fourth week
Provided Materials will include laptops with access to Clever, Teams, and curriculum resources such as Imagine Learning (Learnzillion).
Student Requirements: You will be held accountable for all posted assignments. Students will monitor Teams for assignment updates, scheduled due dates, and class information. Assignment and assessment due dates must be adhered to consistently. ALL missed work must be completed according to STEM/SJBP School District policies. Instruction guidelines will be presented and discussed during orientation sessions and throughout the year.
CLASSROOM POLICIES - Students are required to observe the Non-Negotiable Rules:
- Do’s
- Be on time.
- Complete tasks displayed on the Daily Bellringer Powerpoint.
- Mute your mic (when virtual)
- Dress appropriately
- Stay engaged and complete assignments on time
- Answer questions in the chat or verbally.
- Don'ts
- Disrupt the lesson
- Get frustrated with technology or give up
- Share inappropriate content
- Be late
All STEM Magnet Program students must maintain a 2.75 GPA
- Students earning grades of C or below will be placed on academic probation
- Students will be required to
- attend tutoring (virtual after-school, virtual, etc.) and
- complete all ADDITIONAL assignments assigned by the teacher as a form of remediation.
- Students will be required to
- Academic probation will:
- Include a REQUIRED parental conference, and last for 4 weeks at which time the school’s leadership team will then review the student’s progress to determine if progress has been made to increase the student’s grade(s) above a C.
- If the student has shown satisfactory progress, he/she shall be removed from the academic probation status.
- If the student has NOT shown satisfactory progress, he/she will be recommended for exclusion from the STEM Magnet Program.
- Only be provided to a student once in any academic area/subject and only twice per student during the academic school year.
- Failure to satisfy reinstatement requirements may result in exclusion from the STEM Program.
- LEAP 2025 tests:Class / Course grades - Students failing any course, either 8th grade or high school, will be excluded from the STEM Magnet Program.
- Students scoring Unsatisfactory on the LEAP 2025 will be excluded from the STEM Magnet Program.
Attendance
All STEM Magnet Program students must maintain:
- A satisfactory attendance record as prescribed by the St. John the Baptist Parish School Board’s Student Code of Conduct.
- Due to attendance requirements for students participating in a block schedule, excessive absences can result in a grade of N-F (non-sufficient failure).
- This can delay a student’s expected graduation.
- As mandated within St. John the Baptist Parish School Board’s Attendance Policy, students are recommended to the Truancy Panel after 4 days.
- After a second truancy panel recommendation (6 days), the student will be recommended for exclusion from the STEM Magnet Program.
- Please be advised that late sign-ins and early sign-outs also adversely affect students’ academic progress.
- After 4 late sign-ins and/or early sign-outs, the school reserves the right to recommend the student to the Truancy Panel.
- After a second recommendation (8 occurrences), the student will be recommended for exclusion from the STEM Magnet Program.
- After 4 late sign-ins and/or early sign-outs, the school reserves the right to recommend the student to the Truancy Panel.
Behavior
All STEM Magnet Program students must maintain: Behavior records free from:
- Habitual classroom disruptions,
- Participation in physical altercations,
- Instigation of physical altercations,
- Disrespect to staff and other students, and
- Any other behaviors identified in the St. John the Baptist Parish Student Code of Conduct.
- Students who display any of the above-mentioned behaviors will receive the following consequences as deemed necessary by the school’s administration:
- Classroom interventionsLunch detention
- As included in each teacher’s positive behavior plan which may include:
- Student-Teacher conference,
- Parental contact,
- Lunch detention, and/or
- Official office referral
- As included in each teacher’s positive behavior plan which may include:
- After- school detention, In-school suspension, Out-of-school suspension: Each of these consequences will be administered on a case by case determination.
- Parents will be responsible for providing transportation.
- After receiving 2 out-of-school suspensions, the student will be recommended for exclusion from the STEM Magnet Program.
