Zoom at 11:30 to share your story

 Good Morning!

Today is Thursday 5/7/2020

**OPTIONAL FUN/CHALLENGE PROJECT**

This project will have 2 parts and is inspired by Mo Willams Elephant and Piggy books

**Part 1:  choose 2 animals that will be your fantasy fiction characters (can do things that they couldn't do in real life.  Example a shark that can walk on sand).

For part 1 you are only drawing your charaters--nice neat coloring.

We will share our characters on Zoom Friday.

To find directed drawings for animals/characters do a goolgle search or YouTube search.

Example:  for a tiger search "directed drawing tiger"

**Part 2:  Write a story using thought bubbles.  Think about where your characters are, what they are doing, what happens.  I would say 3-6 pages to tell your story (it can absolutely be more if your child's ideas are flowing!!).  Take a picture of each page of your story (number each page) and a picture of your child and email it to me, I will put it together for you.  We will meet on Zoom Friday to share our stories.

I will post some sample pictures of an Elephant and Piggy story to give you an idea of the format.

I can't wait to see your stories!!

Guided reading lessons and word work practice have been assigned on Lalilo

**If Lalilo is not working properly I have also assigned guided reading on GetEpic

**When working on Lalilo each assigned activity should earn a badge/star, your child only needs to earn 2-3 badges for the day.

Emily (Addison's little sister) is our reader of the day!  Enjoy watching your friend teacher her sister to read!!

Math 7.3  Teen Collections
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BvF9SsEtb1I3mz-NIFd-uZOVkd6tgVkI/view

Watch video making teen numbers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uedvwH6Ay18

Today we will be comparing teen numbers and showing the teen numbers as an

equation of 10 + more (example 14 would be 10 + 4 = 14).

Activity:  materials needed:  2 containers, obejects to count--enough to make 2 teen numbers (stones, legos, beads...).  On paper or a white board draw a line down the middle, draw 2 ten frames on each side.

Step 1:  take the first container and arrange the objects in the ten frames on one side of the paper (so fill a ten frame and the left over in the other ten frame).  Have your child count starting with 10 then count on for the left over (example 14 would be 10--11, 12, 13, 14).

Have your child write the equation under the ten frames.  Then do the same for the other bowl of objects on the other ten frames.

Take a picture and email [email protected]

Step 2:  Compare which teen number is more, which is less.  Ask your child how he/she knows which is more/less (give a minute to think about it).  Example:  if you gave the nubers 14 and 12, they might say 14 has more, 4 is more than 2,  14 has 2 more left overs.

**Your not looking for an exact answer, but getting them to think about how they compared the numbers and explaining their thinking.

Math 6.12 Gowing and Disappearing train
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cxsXDwbtcLUgtOhtIk0jViIQaTSZlrPX/view

Game: Adding and subtracting with the train game

**MODIFIED GAME FOR HOME**   Collect 20 objects (legos, stones, cereal...) and line them up like a train.  You will need a white board or paper to record your equations and a dice.  (if you do not have a dice write the numbers 1-6 on small pieces of paper to fold and put in a bowl, each turn pick a piece of paper to remove that many pieces from the train). This time you are adding and subtracting. You can write on cards: +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +5, -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, mix them and put in a pile face down. I would start with 10 on the train and play until you reach 20 or 0.  EXAMPLE:   You can play this game with more than 1 person (each person would need their own train, take turns picking + or - card, the first person to make the train disappear or reach 20 wins).

Take a picture of your game and at least 1 equation and email [email protected]

write about something you did with your family over the weekend (where were you,

what did you do, who were you with, what happened).

Math 5.8

No need to look at the slides, I am modifying this math lesson to accommodate

materials you may have at home.  For this lesson the kids will be working with teen numbers 11-19.

We have been working on showing teen numbers as a group of 10 and leftover ones.  Example: we have used rods (10) and cubes (1), we have drawn dots, circling a group of 10 dots and drawing the additional dots outside the circle.

Watch video making teen numbers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uedvwH6Ay18

Math activity part 1:

Give your child number cards 11-19, have him/her put them in order, or they can write numbers in the dirt/sand outside, or on the sidewalk using chalk.  If it's raining you can do this inside using number cards, or paper to write numbers 11-19 in order.

Math activity part 2:

take a picture when finished and email: [email protected]

show the numbers as a group of 10 and more ones (example: use any materials/drawing, count 10 and put a circle around it, then show the leftovers outside the circle.  You can also use something long to show the 10 (stick, long lego...) and smaller objects for the leftover ones (stones, small legos...).

Modifications for intervention/challenge will be sent individually

Questions to ask or discuss with your child:

What is a duo?

What were some instruments in the story?

If you could play an instrument which would you choose and why?

MATH

 5.7 Day 1

Focus on slides 5-8 (we have done this lesson together, so the kids know what to do.  Review these slides with your child.  Remind them we had to show in our picture if their were enough seats at the party for everyone, and tell how many more seats we needed.

Word Problem (read the word problem to your child, remind them they can ask you to read it again if they need it, have your child draw to show how they solved the problem) take a picture of their drawing and email it to me: [email protected]

Ben was playing with 3 friends at the park, he had 5 cars to share.  2 more friends came to play with Ben. Does Ben have enough cars for everyone?

**This is more about learning how to do word problems and think about how to solve it than getting it right.  Give your child a chance to think about it independently.  If he/she starts to get frustrated break it down into parts. Example questions to prompt your child:

How many kids started playing at the park?  draw that first

How many cars did Ben have?  draw the cars

How many more kids joined them?  draw the kids

How can you show who gets a car? they might draw lines from the car to the kid

Are there enough cars for everyone?
