Hello 3rd and 4th Grade Families!

In the event of a school closure, please log onto Google Classroom for updates and assignments. Students were also given a letter explaining general plans for reading, writing and spelling. This can be seen below.

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Mrs. Dickinson and Mrs. Hand

Reading

  • Choose one fiction book to read and enjoy, with the goal of completing the My Magnificent Book Report (found in the fourth sheet protector of the student's folder). Complete the book report and add color. Be ready to share when we return to school!

  • Read 30 minutes a day and log. The reading students are doing to complete the book report can count towards the 30 minutes. Students also have extra books in their book baggies. Additionally, there are resources posted on Google Classroom if students would like additional options to read.

  • Complete two reading responses per week. Responses can be written in Reading Response Notebooks or on the Google Classroom Assignment titled, “Reading Response”.

Writing

  • Fictional Narrative and Opinion Choice Boards are attached and available on Google Classroom for students to view. Choose one writing prompt per week to complete. Type the story or essay on Google Classroom. Your teachers will be able to see and respond to your writing. Be on the lookout for compliments and suggestions!

Spelling

  • A Master Buzz Word list and Spelling Choice Board is attached and available on Google Classroom for students to view. Complete two choice board activities per week. Choose ten different Buzz Words to use to complete each activity. Try to choose ten words you may still need practice with! Activities can be completed in their Blue Buzz Words notebooks or on Google Classroom, if appropriate for the activity.

  • Complete two reading responses per week. Responses can be written in Reading Response Notebooks or on the Google Classroom Assignment titled, “Reading Responses”.

  • Check Google Classroom for read alouds and discussion posts. Posts will be related to the week’s lessons. Students will have the opportunity to participate in discussions about our class read aloud and their own books. Skills and strategies that will be discussed in these lessons can and should be applied during independent reading.

Writing

  • Students have been working on writing Literary Essays, or an essay written about a specific story. Attached and on Google Classroom, you will see resources for students to use while drafting another Literary Essay. Students have already written one essay and are expected to follow those same steps to write their next! Essays should be typed on Google Docs, but if this isn’t possible, can be handwritten and turned in when school resumes.

  • Follow the steps to write a new Literary Essay:

  1. Choose a new short story to read. Options: Enemy Pie, Spaghetti, Amazing Grace or Fly Away Home.

  2. Grow an idea about the text by noticing important details about a main character or theme. Collect evidence in the story by highlighting important details and writing ideas on sticky notes.

  3. Create a box and bullets plan. Write your thesis statement in the box and reasons as the bullets.

  4. Type your five paragraph essay on the Google Classroom Assignment, “At-Home Literary Essay”.

  5. Use the 4th Grade Opinion Checklist as a guide and to revise & edit.

  • Your teachers will be able to see and respond to your writing. Be on the lookout for compliments and suggestions!
