Purpose

The purpose of Physical Education is to provide students with the ability to participate in a variety of different individual and team activities as well as realizing the importance of physical fitness.  The students will develop social behavior skills that will allow them to find success in class.

Course Outline

Classes will meet in the gymnasium five times per week.  The students will participate in the following activities throughout the year:

*  Cooperative Activities

*  Volleyball/Newcomb

*  Soccer

*  Floor Hockey

*  Flag Football

*  Badminton (GRADES 6, 8)

*  Pickleball (GRADES 7, 8)

*  Wiffleball

*  Basketball

*  Fitness Training/Fitness Gram (GRADES 6-8)

*  Team Handball

*  Other Team-Related Activities (Tchoukball, Ultimate Frisbee, etc.)

Dress Code

Students will be expected to come dressed to class in proper Phys Ed attire.  Students will not be allowed to participate if they are wearing the following:

-  Shirts that do not reach the waist

-  Sleeveless shirt that is not three fingers width (NO SPAGHETTI STRAPS)

-  Shorts that are not appropriate length and worn around the waist

-  Unaccpetable footwear:  sandals, slides (i.e. Hey Dudes), Crocs, dress shoes, boots

While it is encouraged for students to come to school in active wear since this is a class that is largely based on participation, students can wear clothes (such as jeans) that they are comfortable moving around in.  Students may also change into appropriate footwear when they get into class but will do so in the cafeteria area.  Students may also wear athletic clothing underneath their school clothes for comfortability purposes during class.

Students who do not come prepared will have points deducted from their participation grade (see Grading).

Absences and Lateness

If a student has an excused absence, they will be expected to hand in a note to the school nurse.

Students are expected to report to the gymnasium when the bell rings.  They will have two minutes to get themselves ready (placing their belongings in the cafeteria area, changing into proper footwear, etc.).  If a student takes longer than the time given it will result in a loss of one participation point.

Once they are ready, they will be expected to complete the “Instant Activity” warm up that is on Google Classroom.  Students should report to their spots on the floor with one of their group member's Chromebook (or hard copy list of exercises for my 8-9 class) to complete the exercises with their warm-up groups.  Warm ups groups should not exceed 5 students per Chromebook. Failure to complete ALL “Instant Activity” exercises will result in a deduction of 2 participation points.

Rules and Consequences

Participate.  Sportsmanship.  Respect to others.

These are the three main things that are expected out of all students.  Any student who decides to become a disruption in class will not only lose participation points but will be given the following discipline based on the severity of the action:

         -  Verbal warning after class

         -  Lunch Detention/Parent Contact

         -  Administrative Contact for further action (Referral)

Students are not permitted to have their cell phones out or headphones on during class.  If you need to inform your parents/guardians of anything (club reminder, practice cancellation, bringing something to school), ask Mr. Keane, and you can do this at the main office.  Students who ignore their first warning with the rule will be given a disciplinary referral that will be handled by administration.

Any student who does not participate after their second "unprepared class" (due to participation refusal or improper attire) for the marking period will result in a lunch detention (followed with parental contact) each class to follow.

Grading

Classwork (30%)

Each day students will be able to earn a maximum of 5 points.  Points will be taken away for any student who is not following classroom procedures.

- Students will be required to wear a Heart Zones Strider Step Sensor every day during class.  These devices will monitor the amount of steps the students have taken during class (in addition to other important fitness information).  Students are required to take a minimum  of 1,500 steps most class (adjusted according to activities taking place) to earn full credit for that particular class period (unless otherwise stated by Mr. Keane).  In regards to grading, step total grading will be as followed (in this example, 1,500 steps is the goal for the class):

1,500 steps and above = -0 points

1,400 - 1,499 steps = -1 point

1,300 - 1,399 steps = -2 points

1,200 - 1,299 steps = -3 points

1,100 - 1,199 steps = -4 points

1,100 steps and below = -5 points

-  If a student does not complete ALL Instant Activity exercises, they will lose 2 participation points.  This will be done through the step total of when a student completes the warm up, or on days they are not wearing Striders, will be done through general observation by Mr. Keane.  If Striders are also not worn on a specific day, the other 3 participation points earned will also be done through general observation during all lead up and team activities during class.

-  If a student is late for class (not out on the gym floor after the 2 minute timer has gone off), they will lose 1 point.

-  If a student forgets to put their Strider back at the end of class, and you must come back to retrieve it, you will lose 1 point.  All students are responsible for their Strider.  It is not the job of the student from the next class or Mr. Keane to locate it.

- Each time a student is "unprepared" (not dressed properly) they will lose all 5 points for that day.  On the first offense of being "unprepared" for class each marking period, the students will be given a "free pass" with a deduction of no points.  Students who are "unprepared" will need to give Mr. Keane all electronic devices (cell phone, laptop, gaming system) until the end of the class period and will be given different tasks to assist instruction.  Any student who refuses will face additional disciplinary consequences.

- Students can also lose participation points by displaying poor sportsmanship during classroom activities.  Point deduction will be based on the serverity of the act.

- At the end of each week, students will earn a total grade of the points earned.  For example, if it was a 5-day week, the Classwork grade for that week would be 25 points (4 day week-20 points, 3 day week-15 points, etc).

- If a student is absent during the week they will not be penalized.  Their grade for that week will be adjusted according to the max point total that could be earned that week.  For example, if it is a 5-day week, students can earn 25 points in total for a Classwork grade.  If a student was absent 2 of those days, the max they could earn is 15 points.  The percentage that they earn (ex: 13/15 = 87%) would match the point total for the rest of the class in the gradebook (22/25 = 88%, the number will always be rounded up).

Tests (40%)

At the end of each sport unit, the students will be given some form of an assessment.  Written assessments will take place on Google Classroom.  Students are not allowed to complete assessments outside of class, or they will receive an automatic grade of a zero.  ANY STUDENT WHO MISSES AN ASSESSMENT MUST RESCHEDULE A TIME TO TAKE IT WITH MR. KEANE (PREP PERIOD, BEFORE LUNCH, ETC.).  The assessments will cover the following for each grade:

6th Grade:  written assessment on basic skills and strategies taught throughout the unit

7th Grade:  written assessment on more advanced skills (i.e. individual offensive moves) and the history of the sport being taught

8th Grade:  skill assessment on different strategies and skills taught at the beginning of the unit

Quizzes (30%)

As stated above, students will be wearing their Heart Zone Striders each class.  Students will be expected to log their fitness information for the assigned days posted.  Fitness Information will be posted on Google Classroom no later than the end of each school week.  It is extremely important to not fall behind on the logs and to stay as up to date as possible.  STUDENTS WHO TURN A FITNESS LOG IN LATE WILL BE GIVEN A GRADE NO HIGHER THAN A 70.  These logs will allow the students to track their own fitness progress.

Doctor’s Notes

Any student that will need to be excused from participating and dressing for Phys Ed class will need to bring in a doctor’s note to the school.  Once the school nurse is aware of the issue the student will be excused from class.  That student will be given another role in class, such as teacher’s assistant.

Please sign the “Contract Agreement” given to the student in class.  Any student who does not return a contract slip within the assigned time frame will receive a deduction of zero for their first Classwork grade of the first marking period (late submissions will be accepted but penalized).
