Need an online dictionary?  Here's a great one!

www.wordreference.com

Make sure when using this tool:

  • You choose your language at the top (either English --> French, or Français --> Anglais)

  • When looking up what a French word means, PLEASE leave out the article (le, la, les, l', un, une, des, etc.)
  • Next to each word, you will see many different letters...here's a shortcut:
          • nm = masculine (noun)
          • nf = feminine (noun)
          • nmpl = masculine plural (noun)
          • nfpl = feminine plural (noun)

  • When looking up a verb in French, PLEASE leave out the "to" (so if you wanted to look up "to play," just type in the word "play").
          • Anything with a "v" near or next to is is a VERB

  • Do NOT translate more than a word at a time - this is a DICTIONARY, NOT a translator!  You should be using this as an additional resource, NOT your only one!

*NOTE:  There is a big difference between a translator and a dictionary...make sure you use the reference above and nothing else! (e.g. Google Translate...pas bon!).
